Why Ukraine's Defeat in Attrition May Not Mean a Major Defeat. In the history of armed conflicts, facing a war of attrition and emerging defeated would almost certainly mean surrender or resorting to guerrilla warfare, living in hiding. However, there are no documented cases in military literature of a war of attrition leading to such an intrinsic and meticulously planned resistance as we are witnessing in Ukraine. I previously mentioned that the numbers suggest Russia has won the war of attrition in Ukraine. Contrary to what this might imply, however, this victory will likely have less impact on the battlefield than expected. The reason lies in the shift from large armored convoys and formations to smaller, more agile units, including civilian vehicles, 4x4 buggies, and fast motorcycles. The Russians, in turn, have begun using tanks and armored vehicles as fire support units, fundamentally altering what was previously understood about offensive military doctrines. My perception?: Both sides are now fighting another war. I dare say that large convoys have become obsolete, and anything that moves slowly will have a short lifespan on the front lines. This is the new reality of modern warfare. In a Mad Max-style offensive, dozens of Russian motorcycles and buggies advance at high speed, covered by swarms of drones on the front line, hunting their targets street by street. Amid the roar of engines and explosions, Ukrainians deploy their drones from rooftops and hidden under foliage, pursuing invaders across the battlefield. The loss of armored vehicles, tanks, and artillery in the attrition war matters little to the Ukrainians. They are now fighting a different kind of war. Obviously, an attrition defeat isn’t a desirable position for any army and largely affects troop morale. The image of a Ukrainian soldier riding on the back of a buggy, dodging a Russian drone on instinct, will remain an iconic scene of this modern conflict. With a need for four to five times fewer troops to execute their defensive strategies, the Ukrainians remain very much alive, fighting a new type of warfare that requires far less equipment. When it comes to military doctrine, the war in Ukraine is proving to be a turning point. I would argue that the U.S. is acting with great caution by delaying the renewal of its arsenal. Meanwhile, many around the world may be spending fortunes on equipment that is conceptually obsolete.

@H_Bouwmeester Thanks. Prima draadje. Je schrijft dat Trump alles weggeeft in de hoop dat Rusland Oekraïne niet aanvalt. Het lijkt er eerder op dat hij het wél hoopt, evenals de Baltics. Dit is de tijd van Rapocracy, dixit politiek filosoof Bonnie Honig in NRC, en verkrachters steunen elkaar.

Ik heb even nagedacht om dit ook op deze app te delen. Maar ik weet dat ook mensen het juist waarderen, dus bij deze.

De Verenigde Staten hebben zelfs het volgende toegezegd: - De sancties worden opgeheven. - De troepen van de VS zullen de Baltische Landen vertalen. Dit is het fundament van de NAVO wegtrekken. Hiermee wordt Europa heel erg kwetsbaar. Er zijn ook Nederlanders daar. De crisis wordt niet herkend.
