Godspeed 🫡 Amazing project, Go get them. Some Ghanaians will sit on the sidelines and disparage with a defeatist attitude - “Ghanaians can’t invent”, “Ghanaians can’t compete in AI and Robotics” etc The builders will keep building the future they want to see regardless 🤝

A sustainable and cost-effective approach to improving healthcare technology management is the strategic integration of Biomedical Engineers into the healthcare system. By employing qualified biomedical engineers within hospitals, facilities can significantly reduce operational costs, as most equipment-related tasks from installation to routine maintenance can be handled internally, with expenses largely limited to parts replacement. Biomedical engineers play a critical role in ensuring optimal equipment performance. Their responsibilities include user training, implementation of planned preventive maintenance (PPM) programs to minimize downtime, and timely troubleshooting and servicing when faults arise. Despite their importance, many healthcare facilities currently lack dedicated biomedical engineering personnel, which contributes to inefficiencies and increased reliance on external service providers. For highly specialized equipment such as MRI and CT scanners, it is advisable to establish a dedicated, locally based unit of biomedical engineers who undergo advanced certification training. This specialized team would be equipped to manage complex diagnostics systems within the country, reducing dependency on foreign expertise and associated costs. In summary, the deliberate recruitment and continuous training of biomedical engineers particularly in advanced medical technologies will enhance equipment reliability, improve service delivery, and generate substantial cost savings for both healthcare institutions and the government.

Very good question. A clear directive has been sent to all government health facilities to set aside and dedicate a portion of their revenue for the maintenance of health equipment. This should put an end the problem of frequent breakdown of health equipment.

@thenationguy @gemini_dna Exactly. 🤨 On paper, both sound like big investments, but look at the real value: ¢500 million (~$25M) for medical equipment vs $250M for an AI center. It’s clear where the government’s priorities lie: tech over immediate health needs. People are dying; AI can’t save them today.

¢500 million for medical equipment, yet $250 million for an AI center. Just compare the currencies and decide which one seems to matter more to this government

Kudos to the Ministry of Health for making this possible. The next step should be employing more biomedical engineers to oversee the equipment in the facility, otherwise these machines may eventually become useless. Proper installation, user training, monitoring, preventive maintenance, and corrective maintenance are all necessary to keep hospital equipment functioning efficiently. Sadly, biomedical engineers are often overlooked in the process.

The government has procured 24,534 medical equipment items valued at over GH¢500 million to support the nationwide rollout of the Free Primary Healthcare Initiative, as part of ongoing efforts to retool CHPS compounds, health centres, and polyclinics across the country. #3NewsGH #TV3GH
