Exchanges are listing perpetual RWA products (gold, silver, S&P 500 stocks) again this year. Are gold and silver the new trend in the cryptocurrency market?
At the beginning of 2026, Binance, OKX, MEXC, and Gate.io simultaneously listed perpetual RWA products tracking the price of gold, silver, the S&P 500, and even flagship stocks like Apple and Nvidia.
I/ Reasons why exchanges are listing perpetual RWA.
1/ Clearer Regulations from the United States
- Bills such as the CLARITY Act are being drafted, clearly classifying cryptocurrency tokens as securities or commodities, and transferring management authority from the SEC to the CFTC.
---> This creates a safer environment, encouraging exchanges to expand RWA products to attract institutional and individual investors.
2/ Gold and silver prices are expected to surge in 2025 (gold up approximately 70-80%, silver up approximately 150-200%), causing exchanges to rush to list perpetual certificates (perps) after these assets reach record highs, in order to capitalize on the surge and the demand for hedging.
3/ The trend of tokenizing real assets (RWA) is accelerating:
- RWA perpetual certificates allow virtual trading of real assets such as commodities (gold, silver), foreign exchange, and stocks (including the S&P 500 index) directly from cryptocurrency wallets, without needing to own the physical assets.
- Platforms like Ostium and Coinbase Ventures are prioritizing this expansion, as it aligns with native cryptocurrency products and helps connect DeFi with TradFi.
- In addition, exchanges like MEXC are adopting fee-free gold and silver perpetual certificates to maintain competitiveness.
II/ What are the impacts of this?
1/ For cryptocurrency investors: Increased accessibility, allowing 24/7 trading of traditional assets without a bank account or TradFi exchange --> helps diversify portfolios, hedge against risk (e.g., hedging against inflation through gold), and leverage the high leverage of perpetual bonds.
However, this could increase volatility if the cryptocurrency market negatively impacts RWA.
2/ For the entire cryptocurrency market: Attracts new capital from institutional investors (such as investment funds), increasing liquidity and trading volume on exchanges.
This could "steal the spotlight" from speculative tokens to stable assets like RWAs and stablecoins, leading to a global capital shift.
