@LewisPatzner Maybe. But a work’s appeal across a wide stretch of people starts to tell. Fur Elise and Ode to Joy probably aren’t widely loved because of their rhythmic sophistication, don’t you think?

I don’t consider Beethoven much different from Mozart or Haydn or Bach in terms of his melodic quality or distribution. I really don’t. You could say that these other composers were great melodists but didn’t have a great melody in every work, too.
Even Schubert.

Synthesis: Beethoven is a great melodist, but a LOT of his music lacks a great melody, and the tell is if there are tons of ACCENTS in a movement. That’s him saying, Eh I’m not really feeling it today, I’m just going POUND this one out.

So naturally, the Trump administration let them off the hook with a paltry fine that amounts to less than 1 percent of Live Nation’s revenue.

Yes. If anything she IS overplayed. And it’s not because her music is competent. She’s not better than MacDowell, Foote, or Chadwick. But she had the right profile for our moment. And that’s enough for her breathless supporters to throw around words like they don’t mean anything.

@musicandroots Amy Beach is quite overrated, imo. In my experience she’s performed now quite a bit more than Edward MacDowell, who’s pretty much an exact analog

@musicandroots I guess the term masterpiece is subjective, but I think it’s the best piece for flute and strings.

@LewisPatzner It's an excellent piece, no question. But masterpiece? Ehhh. What Beach misses is a strong personal voice of her own. Her craft was very proficient, but she could never climb out of the spheres of Liszt, Wagner, and Brahms. Op. 80 is no different.

Last week marked the start of the government’s longstanding antitrust case against Ticketmaster, with executives set to take the stand before a jury.
This week the Trump administration is entering into a cheap settlement, depriving artists, fans, and venues of full relief.
Good to see state AGs announce they will keep the case going so that Ticketmaster is actually held accountable for breaking the law.

Instead of taking Live Nation-Ticketmaster to trial, Trump just let them off the hook. The federal government had been building a case for years, and could have broken up the Live Nation-Ticketmaster monopoly. But Trump just let them settle out of court.

If you love going to concerts, Trump's deal means you'll keep paying a "Ticketmaster Tax."

This case against TicketMaster/Live Nation was supposed to go to trial this week. The DOJ, through multiple administrations, has been preparing for years.
Trump just settled it instead, after firing the head of the antitrust division.
There is apparently no amount of corruption too obvious to scare Trump away from it.
