Punisher makes the movie work. He’s kind of the heart of the film. Depressed mid-life crisis Dad with an adopted Son he can tend to and be proud of. You can see that he’s found at least a modicum of peace for his tormented soul because of Peter. It’s honestly beautiful stuff.
