@XavLiew @0xluffy Dubai situation is quite bullish for us but shows how fragile that sort of trust is. My greater concern is how risk-averse Temasek has become

I actually also think it’s the local top for SG but not as hopeless as everyone is. - 6 decades ago sinkies were basically labourers - 5 decades ago sinkies were trained to read and write English - 4 decades ago sinkies were trained for Petrochemicals and manufacturing - 3 decades ago it was engineering and stem - 2 decades ago it was banking and financial services - only recently as early as a decade ago we pivoted to software cloud and cybersecurity. Think people underestimate the ability of Singapore to pivot when in times of distress. Also our UBI system is basically set up (GST voucher payouts + singpass), our tax haven system is pretty robust. With the instability in the Middle East we’ll be expecting more to move here. Finance is 15% of gdp, manufacturing is ~20-25%. Semiconductor chip design contributes as much to gdp as Tourism (~4%). We’re securing data centres via JB-SG special economic zone. Probably already moving into nuclear SMRs. Gov has shown ability to think longer term and Sinkies have shown ability to adapt pretty quickly. The onus is on other nations to prove that they can outperform Singapore imo.

singapore’s attempt to prepare for ai is gonna be futile. nice try but im so skeptical for many reasons like wassie said, sinkies are trained to be sheeps and worker bees. no agency, most can’t think for themselves their ai courses to “prepare” the workforce? if you have been in sgp you’d know these courses are useless. blind leading the blind a self jerking scheme to spend money to hit kpi. money cycling through a system to optimize for metrics
wassieloyer@wassielawyer

Singaporeans will get one-shotted by AI. The entire country is literally educated to be middle management, middlemen and white collar service providers. We’ve literally built the economy on offering the best NPCs to MNCs and we’re about to pay the price.

it's so good that she find out his name is Rumpelstiltskin by just stumbling into him while he's off work, and finding out he spends every second he's not on the clock just saying "im rumple. they forgot im rumple. my name Rumpelstiltskin. im the rump" alone by himself

Did y'all know that the Yakult bottles in Singapore are the biggest in the world (at 100mL) and they come in flavours? Other places get one flavour and 65mL bottles (tiny)

@freddy_mertens @teortaxesTex There are still many illegal settlements that are not high rises. Lots of land being stockpiled by developers. It definitely started out of need but atp it's largely greed.

@bryancsk Pasir Laba Camp was built on my grandfather's old farm. My father used to tell me he would always consider escaping Officer Cadet School since his home was only a hill over.

Apparently 11% of container shipments go through a port owned by or managed by PSA (Port of Singapore) international. That's kinda a lot. The biggest port management company in the world.
Bryan Cheong@bryancsk

More than ten years ago the threat the Northern Passage posed was quietly noted and moves were made to diversify the port-based economy. Partly to this end, PSA (formerly the Port of Singapore) is now the largest international port operator in the world.
