Not many people know or understand that I'm neurodivergent, this happened after I suffered a TBI a few years back, I also have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a tissue connectivity disorder that affects my mobility along with a few other medical issues.
Due to being neurodivergent I sometimes struggle to understand people's behaviour, I can't understand why people state opinion as fact and get aggressive if you disagree with them what ever happened to healthy debate? I can't understand why politics breeds contempt in some people, they judge and again get aggressive or accuse of being something you are not if you support a party that they don't support. I also sometimes say or type things that upset people and fail to understand why they are upset.
I also struggle with racism, homophobia transphobia etc I can't understand why in 2024 these things still exist, shouldn't we just live and let live rather than give in to hate and fear? I really struggle when it comes to ableism, some people don't realise that mental health issues can be classed as a disability and make awful comments like "you need help" or "you're not right in the head" these are actually slurs against the disabled community, I have been discriminated against because of my disabilities and I can't understand why a person could hate me or someone else simply because we have a disability.
There is ignorance, I can forgive people who are ignorant about disability, I hate it when I'm out with family or friends, ordering a meal and the waiter/ress ignores me and asks the person next to me what I'd like to eat as if I can't speak for myself simply because I use a wheelchair, they are usually shocked when I speak up quite clearly and make an order, they seem even more surprised that I ask for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc (my fave wine btw, feel free to buy me a bottle 😁). Ignorance of disability really upsets me, and I try to educate people guilty of this ignorance as best I can.
People with a hidden disability, such as a mental health issue, fibromyalgia or Special Educational Needs face more ableism and ignorance than those who you can see have a disability, I have many friends with a range of different disabilities, and I have heard terrible stories about the ableism they have faced. It's time that things should change for the better, all the hate in the world makes me sick and people stand up and call out racists and homophobes, but no one stands in our corner and fights for the rights of the disabled community, no one thinks about what accessibility means to people, for me it's having level access doors, ramps accessible toilets with turn space and the means to transfer from either side of the loo. For other people it might be having a hearing loop system, a tactical map, or a quiet, safe place when the have a sensory overload whilst out doing everyday activities.
I feel that education is the way forward. I think all children should be taught Sign Language in schools and they should also be taught about a range of disabilities in classes, it’s the same with racism, children should be taught the horrible parts of history and the origins of racism, homophobia, and ableism etc. Wouldn't it be nice to live in a world that is accessible and inclusive for all, where hate doesn't exist? Sadly, I don’t think I’ll ever live long enough to see that world.
