During the Yugoslavian civil war, I was baptized Ortodox in the Crkva Sv. Proroka Ilije (Holy Prophet Elijah). The Holy Prophet Elijah, known in Hebrew as Eliyahu, meaning “My God is Yahweh,” was a prophet in the 9th century BCE during the reign of King Ahab in the northern kingdom of Israel. He is famous for defending the worship of Yahweh against the idol worship of Baal, particularly confronting King Ahab and Queen Jezebel. Elijah performed several miracles, including raising the widow’s son in Zarephath and calling down fire from heaven on Mount Carmel to demonstrate God’s power. He also experienced God on Mount Horeb, not in dramatic displays but in a quiet, subtle presence, often described as a “still, small voice.”In Christianity, Elijah is considered a prefiguration of John the Baptist and a symbol of zeal for God and spiritual courage. He is especially revered in the Eastern Orthodox Church, with his feast day celebrated on July 20. His life and deeds represent prayer, divine justice, and unwavering faith. In cultural traditions, particularly in the Balkans, Elijah is associated with protection against thunderstorms and fire. Elijah is often depicted in religious art wearing prophetic robes, holding a scroll or staff, and sometimes accompanied by a chariot of fire, symbolizing his ascent to heaven. According to the Bible, Elijah did not die a normal death but was taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire, which is recorded in 2 Kings 2:11. "And as they were going along and talking, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven."
