I’ll tell ya, friends: Few things in life are as profound as a strong sense of place. Nothing compares to possessing intimate knowledge of a specific spot on this Earth, a piece of the world that is yours, which belongs to you and, deeper still, to which you belong. Who I am was formed here, in the land of the saguaro. Here is my territory. Here is my country. Here is my patria.

@LifeInTheMetaxy In fairness, 7:00 am in the Sonoran Desert feels like midday every place else. 😁

@elle__oh__elle You're more than welcome. I'm glad to do it. I'm glad there are others who enjoy seeing this desert "up close and personal," as ABC's Wide World of Sports used to say. 🤣

It’s wild that clouds do this and we can’t see it. Before photography, they used to argue about whether a horse’s hooves all left the ground at once. Imagine trying to tell them this.

@natecooley Wow, yeah, that is a gorgeous painting. Thanks for your kind words too, although I hate to have to admit that I took that photo about 7 a.m., shooting in an easterly direction.

Wow! Great photo. It remind me of one of my favorite paintings. Danish artist Peder Mørk Monsted’s At Noon on a Cactus Plantation in Capri (1885). FWIW, this piece is a textbook example of a high-key realist landscape painting. It’s not Sorolla or Sargent, but this is an exceptional example of the high key value strategy or mode of lighting. It’s incredibly hard to depict with oil paint and to photograph the desert landscape at midday. But this painting and your photo do a great job of it.

@LifeInTheMetaxy I've has a garden forever & grow 80% plus of my own veggies. However much water you think you'll need, double it, & plan on putting in some of the shade netting over the delicate plants. Sprout indoors, plant early, & try and have the harvest done by mid July.

@UpNorthloon I'm at a much lower elevation--but I don't have soil. I have granite.

@LifeInTheMetaxy Very difficult in the desert. I have a garden where I live in NM, 4300 elevation, it's still not that easy. Squash, peppers maybe. Tomatoes would have to be babied. Unless you come up with a design for good soil & ability to partially cover your crops intermittently.
