@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 There are many ways to be advocates for our students. Assessing their needs and situations are key details in becoming their voice. We are their protectors in a sense. We are in difficult times and we need to learn what more we can do for the students needing more help #EDEL5200

Q1: How can we be advocates for our students? @MrsGallardo1 #EDEL5200
English

@Stephan57524108 @WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 I really like this answer, supporting our students is key. We are definitely in difficult times right now so it is so important that we be these kiddos voices when they have needs.
English

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 We can be advocates for our students by listening to our students and always supporting them in everything- in the good times and, especially in difficult times. We can be the person who they can seek for help whenever they have no one else.
English

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 Empathy is one thing I value, especially with distance learning I let my students and parents know I understand the struggles. Their feelings will not be swept underneath the rug in my classroom. It’s how to build strong positive relationships. #EDEL5200
English

Q2: What does it mean to have empathy? @MrsGallardo1 #EDEL5200
English

@nico_colin @WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 Yes Nico, it is very important to empower students. They need to know that they are capable of anything. Having a positive mindset is key!
English

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 A2: By empowering my students and highlighting their strengths I can create a safe and brave space. Within them they have skills to get started and by promoting a positive mindset, they will be able to build upon those skills.
English

Q3: How will you create a safe AND brave space for all students? @MrsGallardo1 #EDEL5200
English

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 I give a lot of affirmation to my kiddos. I start our day with “good things” so they can share and I can assure things in their lives have value. I also have them repeat “Do you believe in me? Because I believe in me. I believe I can do anything!”
English

@AllisonCheatwo1 @WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 This is something similar to what I do with my class, it is important to let students know that they are cared for. A teacher stating something positive to a student may be the only good thing they hear all day.
English

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 Every day, I start my class with the following mantra: "I am Smart, I am Kind, I am Important." starting the day with this kind of affirmation reinforces for my students the idea that they are valued when in my care and classroom.

@missmjung @WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 @joboaler Number talks and which one doesn’t belong seem like great activities! I’ll have to try that with my kiddos! #EDEL5200 #fluencywithoutfear
English

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 @joboaler Some ways I will encourage students to use numbers flexibly is by incorporating daily activities to increase math fluency in the beginning of our math time. Some examples are number talks, “which one doesn’t belong?”, and estimations. This will become routine in the classroom.
English

Q2: How can we encourage students to use numbers flexibly? #EDEL5200 #fluencywithoutfear @joboaler @MrsGallardo1
English

@di_ana_l11 @WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 You’re completely right! A student needs the proper foundation of number sense so they do not become a lower achieving student in the future. #EDEL5200 #fluencywithoutfear
English

@WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 The memorization of math facts is “unnecessary and damaging” because students need to learn the process of math instead of feeling pressured to memorize math facts. Providing students with the proper number sense skills builds a firm foundation for their future in math. #EDEL5200
English

Q1: Why is the memorization of math facts “unnecessary and damaging”? #EDEL5200 #fluencywithoutfear @joboaler @MrsGallardo1
English

@WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 Q1: memorization is damaging and ineffective because is does not allow the students to grasp why something is or how a student processes the problem. It is more important for my students to tell me how they got to an answer #EDEL5200 #fluencywithoutfear
English

@TovarAlexsus @WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 @joboaler Math fluency is so so important! Math games are a great way to keep students engaged!
English

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 @joboaler A4: Teaching math fluency is an alternative to timed math tests. Teachers are able to assess students through math fluency and flexibility. Games may be another alternative to getting the kids excited and check for understanding. #EDEL5200 #fluencywithoutfear
English

Q4: Describe alternatives to a timed math test. #EDEL5200 #fluencywithoutfear @joboaler @MrsGallardo1
English

@WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 Q4: Another alternative to time math facts would be games. In my DL class I play tic-tag-toe and my kids love it. The way they get it correct is if they can tell me what strategy they used to get the answer. #EDEL5200 #fluencywithoutfear
English

@WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 Q3: reasons for math anxiety is placing students under timed pressure to have fast recall for problem sets. This cause students to feel the stress because of the pressure of time. #EDEL5200 #fluencywithoutfear
