I’ve also seen them on the counter at convenience stores. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Originally, TIPS were given “To Insure Prompt Service”, and were given to Hosts/Hostesses.

And it’s not my job to pay your salary, it’s the job of your employer Can someone please explain the strange US 20–25% tipping culture? Many countries around the world don’t have tipping as a common practice. The business simply pays the salary. Why is it so different in the US?

No work, no pay, simple idea or too simplistic? Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana has introduced legislation to withhold senators' pay during government shutdowns. The bill passed the Senate Rules Committee with unanimous bipartisan support and is now awaiting a vote by the full Senate. If passed, it would take effect after the November 2026 elections and require the Secretary of the Senate to hold each senator's paycheck in escrow until the shutdown ends. The push comes after the fall 2025 government shutdown, which lasted 43 days and became the longest in US history. During that time federal workers, soldiers, border agents and air traffic controllers went without pay. Some took second jobs to survive. One bank issued over $365 million in emergency loans to keep federal employees afloat. The shutdown cost an estimated $15 billion per week in lost GDP. Senators continued collecting their full salaries throughout. Kennedy has said if Congress cannot do its job and fund the government then members do not deserve a paycheck.
