New Vocations
New Vocations@NewVocations·
The work of New Vocations doesn’t stop once a horse is adopted. We know how crucial the first year is for both the horse and the adopter, which is why our team remains on standby to support a successful transition. These updates allow us to step in if any challenges arise and help us keep our donors informed about the horses they’ve supported. Thank you to @lightupracing for capturing and sharing this with the public. We are incredibly grateful for our New Vocations team, as well as the donors and adopters who make our mission possible. #NewVocations #RacehorseAdoption #Aftercare #RetiredRacehorse #AdoptAHorse #HorseRescue #Thoroughbred #Standardbred #OTTB #EquestrianLife #HorseLovers #AdoptDontShop #HorsesOfInstagram #HorseCommunity #Equestrian #HorseWelfare #SupportAftercare #Nonprofit #AnimalRescue #ThankYou

Most assume a horse in a paddock is the safest place but the reality due to oversight tells a different story.

It’s true you won’t see a breakdown replayed on TV. Same reason you wouldn’t loop footage of a car crash or a dog being hit - it’s basic respect for the people and the animal. These incidents are rare: there are around 19,000 races a year and 99.9% of them are completed safely. When something does happen, it’s reviewed by vets and stewards and recorded in the official reports. It’s not hidden, we just don’t turn the worst 5 seconds into shock content.

As incredible a trainer as Richard Mandella is, race-day welfare calls can’t be made on reputation. The Breeders’ Cup vets are there to be the bad guy if they have to. If they see even a hint of something, they scratch - because the only thing worse than disappointing connections is letting a horse run and wishing you hadn’t. That’s how you minimise the chance of disasters.

@markcpro @fatbaldguyracin It’s a snapshot of that moment in time. Issues can happen immediately after - such as kicking a wall, getting cast, clipping itself.

@fatbaldguyracin The Pet Scan is only used to eliminate your horse. If you come back clean they will not use those results/opinions to help verify your horse is ok.

@Robin11119224 @fatbaldguyracin The exams and the decisions can never be routinized but disclosure of the process and the decision makers should. The failure by the industry and the media in the USA to disclose the fatality is confirmation that the industry has no standards, only fear of bad publicity.

Statement from trainer Jack Davison: She’s Quality fractured her pelvis in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. She was taken to San Luis Rey Equine Hospital and despite care, was humanely euthanised overnight. Our hearts go out to Jack and his team, and her owners, who loved and cared for her.

@JessicaRam82 Gin Gin is fine, Brendan Walsh confirmed to our team an hour ago 👌 “Yes she's fine, I guess when she broke thru the gate it unsettled her and she was just never in the race from there, so he eased up on her.”

Unfortunately event the tightest scrutiny can’t stop accidents during the race. Pelvic fractures are most likely to occur when the horse leaves the gates due to the sudden action. It’s particularly difficult to detect pelvic issues because they are very hard to scan - CT, MRI, PET are restricted to limbs. Nuclear scintigraphy may have picked up a pre-existing issue (if there was one) but it’s not a tool you can use pre-race at a racetrack screening on every horse

@Rennietime Seems there’s some assumptions there - has he been PET scanned since the scratching?

@LightUpRacing 15 vets looked at him for a week long. But 5 mins before race all of sudden he can’t run? Then next day he comes back clean? Ya right lol who believes that

A horse being scratched on raceday is devastating for connections. Dr. Will Farmer takes us through why it can happen and why the horse must always come first.

That is unfortunate for owners who put a lot of work into getting the horse to that meet. Vets don’t take these decisions lightly but if something seems off the best approach is always to err on the side of caution and put the horse first so they have the chance to race again another day.
