🧠💬 In 1966, at a time when computers were still seen as cold, mechanical calculators, a simple program shocked researchers by doing something deeply human: it made people feel understood. The program was called ELIZA, created by computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum at MIT. ELIZA simulated a psychotherapist by responding to users with reflective questions. If someone typed “I feel sad,” ELIZA might reply, “Why do you feel sad?” Technically, ELIZA was extremely limited. It didn’t understand language, emotions, or meaning. It relied on simple pattern matching and scripted rules. And yet, something unexpected happened. People began opening up to it. Some users spent long periods conversing with ELIZA. Others asked to be left alone with the program. A few treated it as a confidant, even after being told it wasn’t intelligent. Weizenbaum himself was disturbed by how quickly humans projected empathy and understanding onto a machine that had none. This reaction became known as the ELIZA Effect: the tendency for humans to attribute intelligence, intention, or emotion to computer systems that are merely following rules. It was one of the first warnings that AI doesn’t need to be sentient to be persuasive. Ironically, ELIZA turned Weizenbaum into one of AI’s earliest critics. He became a vocal opponent of using computers in roles requiring human judgment, care, or moral responsibility. In his view, the danger wasn’t that machines would think like humans, but that humans would trust machines too much. Nearly sixty years later, ELIZA’s lesson feels more relevant than ever. Modern AI systems are vastly more powerful, fluent, and convincing. But the psychological vulnerability ELIZA exposed hasn’t changed. Humans still form emotional bonds with systems that simulate understanding. ELIZA wasn’t just the first chatbot. It was the first mirror, showing us how easily we mistake imitation for intelligence. #ThrowbackThursday #AIOrigins #CyberHistory
