Last night, drones entered Estonian airspace without authorization. It is linked to Ukraine’s self-defence against Russia’s aggression. Our forces and NATO Air Policing responded swiftly. There is no imminent threat to Estonia. We thank allies 🇮🇹🇪🇸 and remain in readiness.

@edwardlucas is right - even friends of the Baltics have spread the dangerous and false narrative that: a) the Baltics are incapable of inflicting significant pain on an invader, and b) NATO is effectively defunct. Exactly the story Moscow would like to take hold.

The Baltic states are not permitting their airspace to be used for attacks on other countries.

#OTD, we remember the more than 20,000 Estonians, who were forcibly deported by the Soviet regime to Siberia in March 1949. Entire families and communities were erased overnight simply for being Estonian. People were driven from their homes at gunpoint, packed into cattle wagons, and sent on a brutal journey across thousands of kilometres. Many never returned. Those who did carried the trauma for the rest of their lives. 77 years later, the Russian regime continues to use the same methods, illegally deporting Ukrainians, especially children, deep into Russia, severing them from their families, their language, and their homeland. Forced labour, indoctrination, and abuse remain common tools in Russia’s arsenal. Today, we honour those who suffered in 1949 and stand with those facing similar crimes in Ukraine. Memory is a form of resistance, and remembering ensures these atrocities are neither forgotten nor repeated. Russia must be held accountable.

@joshuachuminski @kennaninstitute I agree - continuing to use this terminology is unfortunate as it effectively plays into the hands of Moscow who would always like to stake a rhetorical claim to any European nation it ever managed to occupy.

Great news for the @kennaninstitute, but we need to move beyond the "former Soviet Union" label. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania et. al. have been independent for over three decades & have developed robust national identities not tied to their former occupied status. Just a thought.

Russian fighters who have taken part in the aggression against Ukraine have no place in Europe. They pose a direct threat to Europe’s internal security. They have recent combat experience. Many were recruited from prison. Europe must urgently prevent their entry into the EU and Schengen.
