If you have people who repeat themselves a lot, they don't think you're listening. That's not their problem. It's yours. Repetition is a signal. They're saying "I don't feel heard." So they say it again. Louder. Different words. Same point. Zen of Listening taught me to check myself when someone repeats. Instead of getting annoyed, I ask: what did I miss the first time? Usually the answer is I heard the words but didn't acknowledge the feeling behind them. Acknowledge the feeling. The repetition stops.

If you have meetings that end with everyone agreeing but nothing changing, you have a facilitation problem. People say yes to end the meeting. Not because they're bought in. Crucial Conversations calls this false agreement. It looks like alignment. It's not. Before you close, ask: "What might get in the way of this actually happening?" Then wait. The objections they didn't voice will surface. Better now than in the hallway after. Real alignment means people leave ready to act. Not just ready to escape.

Have you ever been the outsider in a room full of experts? I have. Only IT guy in a room of finance professionals. They're throwing around terms, debating numbers, speaking a language I don't fully know. I usually enter those rooms for a reason. Either an executive sent me with a directive, or there's a problem that needs a non-status quo solution. My move: play dumb. "Help me understand this. I'm just the tech guy." They explain. They simplify. They reveal what they actually think - because they're not performing for me. I'm not a threat. Then I weave in my suggestions. Guide the conversation where it needs to go. Playing dumb isn't weakness. It's influence.
