David Betz is a well known and respected name to me. This was a hard listen. Yet I think it uncontroversial to say we are a poorer, more fractured and more frustrated society. Is our next war a civil war? louiseperry.co.uk/p/the-coming-b…

Can you imagine a foreign diplomat in China calling for the CPC Secretary-General to be “beheaded”? No — for basic human decency and diplomatic protocol And if any diplomat did that, their own government would sanction them long before China even expelled them There is no debate
Hu Xijin 胡锡进@HuXijin_GT

This new diplomatic conflict between China and Japan was entirely instigated by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. If Japan dares to expel Chinese diplomats, China will inevitably retaliate. Well then, Sanae Takaichi is an evil witch; she has successfully ignited a new explosion of mutual hatred between Chinese and Japanese public opinion.

The internet shutdown in Afghanistan happened in real time in my online poetry class on Monday. The women's accounts dropped out one by one. The last to go was Neda. Just before her image froze, I promised to put her poem on Twitter. She's 11. Online was her last hope of education. @WRNAfghanistan

@SO3Beards And this isn’t a wind-up. I’m interested in moral philosophy and praxis and don’t like to live in an echo chamber. This site used to be really good for interesting conversations. Now it is mostly angry people shouting at each other. I am genuinely interested in your perspective.

@SO3Beards With regards to your examples: is your issue with the ethical framework, the moral code, the implementation of all moral code or all three?

@robert_lyman Old boss of mine! An unhealthy habit of politely yet persistently telling truth to power, which is why I suspect he never went further than he did. Not just clever, but perceptive too. One of the few I look up on my very rare forays to the Home Counties and London. Lovely chap.

@SO3Beards I think @robert_lyman’s point is focused on basic standards. Fashions change, the standards have not. We went ‘ally’ in Afghanistan and saw the results in shocking DNBI rates.

@SO3Beards There’s not much combat experience in the Army left now judging by the medals. And how pertinent that experience is to LSCO is debatable. Looking at ARRC and 3 Div on exercise I would say that we have a fair way to go to get to where we need to be.

Quintus and his wife Clarina made this grave memorial for their dearest, most devoted, and well-deserving son, Alexander. He lived three years, four months, and eighteen days. They beg of you, that when you pass by, you say aloud to Alexander: 'Sit tibi terra levis' - 'May the earth rest lightly on you.' The marble grave marker includes a libation hole, into which visitors could pour libations of wine, milk, or honey as offerings to Alexander in the afterlife. From the Via Ostiense cemetery, 2nd century AD, Capitoline Museums.

@NaomiNiCathain Stark is an annoyed historian. He is not a Catholic, but the more he dug into history the more annoyed he got about what he found out. It is a good primer for personal study. Wilson’s book is an excellent primer on the Thirty Years War. By the way I’m a great fan of Tom Crean!

Reminds me that Tolkien admitted (self deprecatingly) he had only gotten his teaching position at Oxford ‘cos everybody else had died in WW1. It’s frustrating to think of all the talent lost from those two world wars.
Antigone Journal@AntigoneJournal

A prize-winning Latin poem on King Alfred's defence of England against the Danes, written at Cambridge by the 20-yr-old John Darrell Boyd in 1938. Three years later he died on service at sea, sunk by U-96 (Das Boot).

@FennellJW @felix_sears I volunteered at a residential migrant family support centre a couple of years ago. When I started I commented on the lack of books, games, computers and telephones. The staff replied that they used to provide them, but now everyone came with smart phones, they just needed Wi-Fi.

@LineWallah @felix_sears I'msimilar, but mainly as I prefer to use my laptop and the landline. I'm pretty sure if refugees don't have mobile phone's they also don't have laptops or landlines either.

Always like a good reading list! I’ve read Haidt (highly recommended) and Trueman (esoteric for some I suspect, but very good). The others sound interesting. As ever, modern society is a multi faceted beast.
Colonel@panterdownes

@SO3Beards There’s lots of good reading out there already on how we got to where we are. I would recommend: Anxious Generation by @JonHaidt The Hype Machine by @sinanaral Crashed by @adam_tooze The End of Power by @MoisesNaim The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self by Carl Trueman.
