The only photo from the X-37B secretive space plane For over a decade, the X-37B has been one of the most fascinating and secretive space plane ever built. Since its first launch in 2010, it has circled Earth for more than 4,000 days across seven missions, testing technologies that remain largely classified. In February 2025, the U.S. Space Force released something nobody expected: a photo! The image shows Earth glowing in the background, with one of the vehicle's solar panels visible on the left and what appears to be its open payload bay along the top. The photo was taken while the X-37B was conducting experiments far above the African continent in 2024. What makes this mission unusual: previous X-37B flights operated in low Earth orbit, but this one ventured far higher — into a highly elliptical orbit capable of reaching geosynchronous altitudes over 22,000 miles above our planet. And during this mission, it pulled off a first-ever aerobraking maneuver — using the thin drag of Earth's upper atmosphere to gradually shift its orbit while burning almost no fuel at all. This single image is all the public has ever seen of the X-37B operating in space. No live footage. No mission updates. No explanation of what it's really testing.
