Wonderful to be back at Marsden Road Public School in Liverpool Sydney as part of a Senate inquiry into increasing disruption in Australian school classrooms. Through explicit instruction including the explicit teaching of civics and citizenship, students are taught how to behave in the classroom and teachers are provided with the support they need to minimise disruption. Here, there are barely any incidents of classroom disruption. With committee chair Matt O’Sullivan, we also celebrated Australian Primary Principals Day with the incredible Manisha Gazula who has transformed the lives of her students at Marsden Road by adopting best-practice teaching and learning methods, based on the science.

Underpinned by high impact explicit instruction, intensive teacher training and other evidence-based teaching and learning methods, principal @manisha_gazula's vision at Marsden Road Public School in western Sydney is to give every child a life of choice, not chance. Under Manisha’s inspiring leadership, the school has seen a significant increase in its NAPLAN results since the rigorous explicit teaching of literacy and numeracy was adopted five years ago. Lifting school standards is critical to combating disadvantage and ensuring that every child can reach their full potential. It's a national embarrassment that 20 per cent of Year 7 students have the ability of a student in Grade 4. Marsden Road is one of numerous schools showing what can be achieved when our dedicated and hard-working teachers are supported by the best teaching methods.

This has been transformational for the school’s 720 students, 90% of whom are from non-English speaking backgrounds. This is great Lisa! We’re blown away seeing you utilising these lessons in your classroom, and being able to teach three different levels of phonics at the same time, with whole class differentiated learning and retrieval practice. Amazing!
