@lcmporter I'm so, so sorry to hear this Lizzie. Çok çok geçmiş olsun. I had a milder scare in my 20s and also struggled with disordered eating, so the impacts were doubly "weighted" for me too. Mine was benign (but a part of it doesn't function somehow??). Wishing a smooth path for you.

This is something I never thought I would be writing. I have cancer. I was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer, after a routine check up ultrasound. I had no symptoms and no risk factors. I considered myself a healthy person, with a few of the rough edges that life and ageing draw. It has come as a terrible shock. Ever the journalist, today I got a second source confirmation of the diagnosis. The doctor’s office was academic, filled with studded leather sofas, abstract paintings and walls lined with medical tomes, including one on thyroid cancer illustrated with an Ottoman miniature of a throat surgeon wielding a scalpel. But it was his modern ultrasound machine that confirmed what doctors had already told me: a tumour on the right side of my thyroid. Part of me has tried to carry on living normally - working, seeing my friends and occasionally forgetting that I have been diagnosed. Another part of me has been crushed. I have had to research a topic I had no interest in becoming “expert” in. I have to accept that the future weeks hold surgery, seemingly unending visits to specialists, and after that a lifetime on thyroid hormone replacement drugs. I am worried about the long term. I am worried about possible impacts on my metabolism triggering a relapse into the anorexia that I worked so hard to beat. Even thinking about returning to that darkest of places starts to provoke a panic attack. I can beat cancer, but I don’t know if I have the strength in me to beat anorexia again. And yet another part of me has hope. The more I read about this subject, which until two weeks ago I had no reason to research, the more I realise I am not alone. Thyroid cancer diagnoses have shot up in recent years, especially in women of my age group, thanks to better diagnostic techniques. Some doctors call it the “best cancer” , which does feel slightly dismissive but also reflects the excellent prognosis and recovery rates. I am not the first person to go through this and I won’t be the last. I now feel like I am taking the deep breath before the plunge. The coming weeks are going to be tough. I’ll be taking some periods of time away from social media. But I am determined to get to a place where this is all one of my stories past.

Tomorrow marks 10 years since Turkey's failed coup attempt. With @hakkitash, we unpack how the events of 15 July 2016 catalyzed a decade of "epic autocratization." Epic in scale, epic in the narrative of "destan" the AKP used to legitimize it. giga-hamburg.de/en/publication…

Une très bonne étude de @LiselHintz et @hakkitash sur les conséquences politiques de la tentative de coup d'État de juillet 2016 en Turquie. Les auteurs parlent d"epic autocratisation" pour qualifier l'évolution du régime turc depuis ce moment "fondateur" : "The New Turkey is a regime of ironies. In the decade since 15 July 2016, it has purged to enlarge, turned a founding agenda of neoliberal privatisation into the largest public payroll in the Republic’s history, and deepened clientelism precisely when it had the least to spend. The coup attempt and its aftermath have been viewed, reasonably enough, through a lens of destruction: firings, suppression, and the hollowing of state institutions. Yet the period is best understood as a process of authoritarian construction advancing on two simultaneous, mutually reinforcing fronts: the coup attempt supplied the founding myth and discursive repertoire of the new state, creating a permissive environment in which securitisation became perpetual, while the institutional opening through which the state was remade became larger, more centralised, and more tightly bound to one man" giga-hamburg.de/en/publication…
