In Turkey, journalists are detained because of their reporting. They spend days or even months behind bars, deprived of their freedom. The journalists who sat down to dinner with Communications Director Duran at this meeting are fully aware of that reality. So why were arrests and detentions in Turkey brushed aside with nothing more than a single question about Deniz Göktaş? Everyone knows what is happening. Our colleagues’ agenda should not only be foreign policy; it should also include the journalists who have been detained.
