The lexicon of empire has always been fluent in sanitizing crimes—just read how The New York Times or The Financial Times discuss the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. They speak of “resettlement” or "relocation", a term weighted with the smug benevolence of bureaucracy as if the question at hand were merely a logistical problem to be smoothed out. The Palestinian is reduced to a moving part, a negotiable presence, a misplaced comma in the grand imperial manuscript.

The Israeli bombing of a refugee camp inside a designated safe zone is horrific. Israel has a duty to protect innocent civilians and Palestinians seeking shelter in Rafah have nowhere safe to go. Netanyahu’s assault of Rafah must stop. We need an immediate cease-fire.
