Back from the Fastmarkets Battery Raw Materials Conference in Shanghai — the mood in the lithium market is unrecognizable from October. Optimism is real, and here's what's driving it: Consensus is building around a coming shortage. BESS demand is accelerating and some predict it will overtake EV as the growth driver, helped by improving cycle life economics. EV growth is slowing domestically, but Chinese exports are expected to compensate. Africa supply expansion remains a concern. Li sulfate is becoming the go-to intermediate. Sodium-ion barely came up — though above $35/kg it could start taking share. With ~90% of global lithium demand sitting in China, this is a must-attend event for any producer or future producer. #GhParliament has ratified by resolution the mining lease agreement b/n GoG & Barari DV Ghana ltd for the mining of lithium & other minerals at Mankessim. The minority voted en-bloc against the motion citing concerns of a change in original agreement as first introduced in 2024.

Delighted to confirm that our first trucks loaded with spodumene concentrate from Bougouni Project were successfully transported to Port of San Pedro, Côte d'Ivoire. First trucks arrived on Monday and so far 75 trucks-loads navigated the ~900km journey in just over 5 days. (1/2).

This is HUGE for $BESS. China announced a new plan to target 180GW of New Energy Storage by 2027, spending CNY250bn (US$35bn). Let's dig into the numbers: According to Rho Motion: Global installed BESS = 189GW/457GWh in 2024. #China is growing its own capacity to reach the global installed base within two years! China's National Energy Admin data: Installed BESS = 73.8 GW/168GWh in 2024. This new plan will more than double their BESS base. Also, GWh matters: the new plan will likely be 3-4 hours storage, given the current 2.3hr installed base and real-world needs, so the incremental 106GW ---> 320-420GWh of new BESS #lithium demand. Arcane's grid-scale BESS numbers for 2025/26/27 are 260GWh, 380GWh and 520GWh. China will underpin this growth towards our decade-end target of a global 1,500 GWh BESS market. This will consume 1.1Mt LCE of #lithium, nearly equal to the entire 2024 market. Best part for last. China tends to EXCEED their targets. Their 2021 plan was for 30GW of energy storage by this year. They hit 95GW as of Jun 2025! Better than even odds that they will surpass this 180GW "target" as well. If they exceed by 3x like they did the last target, or even "merely 2x", they'd blow my BESS forecasts out of the water... Little aside: China will "推动沙漠、戈壁、荒漠等新能源 基地" i.e. they're going to build these in deserts, Gobi desert, etc. It'll be cheap!
