Can't say I'm too devastated that the Buffy reboot has been shelved. I'd have given it a fair go, but I feel the original had a good run and ended on a high. Not sure it needed resurrection. Firefly, on the other hand... very interested to see what the teaser videos are about!

@MrTimDunn @TalyllynRailway @spicegirls I Wannabe... So I booked my tickets yesterday! Found a nice place to Stop in Tywyn. After all, you can never have Too Much of the Talyllyn. It'll be really hard saying Goodbye at the end of the weekend. Just no renumbering 'Dolgoch' please! ;-)

Railway preservation on an epic scale began three-quarters of a century ago at @TalyllynRailway. Come join us in Wales in May for an INCREDIBLE weekend of stories & trains from 1950s 1960s 1970s 1980s 1990s and the years after @spicegirls broke up. Say you’ll be there… I will!🚂

@RichardBratby @railnigel Is there not a risk of 'thermal shock' doing this to a cold loco, as parts rapidly expand instead of warm gently? Similar to if you drop a hot beaker into a cold bowl of water (as often happened in school science classes). Genuine question, as I have a few live steamers myself.

@railnigel No! Surely this cannot be a new idea to you! I fill all my live steamers with boiling water apart from the Roundhouse Basic series ones which have no gauge glass and a gas tank that's designed to run dry before the boiler.

@AllieJade1 A tip. Fill the boiler with boiling water from the kettle. That way you will require less meths to get steam up and the run will last longer!

@railnigel I remember reading about it in the 'Main Line' column in Steam Railway at the time, probably mid-90s. My vague recollection was that it involved a Stanier Pacific, and was in the North West somewhere but can't recall any other details.

That's a new one on me! Never heard that. It would make sense though because for the energy exchange which is crucial to an injector working properly to take place, the feed water needs to be as cold as possible. An injector won't normally work with a hot water feed.

Do you remember when a water tanker arrived to replenish a mainline charter and the tanker driver said the water was already boiling "to save the crew time"?! Water was rejected and a diesel summoned.

This unit survived in Japan because it was used as a kindergarten. Imagine a 455 etc being used for such a purpose in the UK 😀

@Captain_Deltic It would be interesting if they were to compare average dwell times with/without reservations. They always seem to slow down boarding as passengers block the aisle trying to find their seat and having to turf out/argue with someone already in it.

EMR withdrawing Intercity seat reservations from 1 April. Meridians and 810s have different seating plans and EMR can't be sure which will be allocated to which service on the day.

@seatsixtyone @jonnysmorrison You could even arrange it so that if the ticket isn't collected/activated in time, any linked seat reservations are cancelled and the seats freed up for others. Probably too much for the ancient IT systems behind all this to handle though.

DON'T BUY TRAIN TICKETS IN ADVANCE! On 1 April, govt is quietly changing the National Rail Conditions of Travel. Off-Peak & Anytime tickets become non-refundable after 23:59 the day BEFORE you travel. If you wake up & find your event cancelled, NO REFUNDS, even on £100+ tickets.

In a bid to clamp down on ticket fraud that costs the railways millions each year, the government has quietly changed the rules on claiming refunds for unused train tickets. ianvisits.co.uk/articles/fare-…

@ChimeWhistle True, though it sounds like XC are now trying to push for them and it'll be a lot easier if they aren't already committed elsewhere. The ROSCO may also be prepared to offer a better deal if the only options for them are XC, indefinite storage or scrap.

The WSMR VIP special is currently on its way to London. Hopefully, it's a prelude to the open access operator being given approval. Photograph from my archive of Wrexham & Shropshire Railway 67015 being named.flic.kr/p/2rYVviF

@ChimeWhistle I suspect most honest passengers will react with an ambivalent shrug - don't think I've ever needed to refund a flexible ticket on or after the day of travel (except in case of disruption). Those who have been refunding used but unscanned tickets will be rather more upset!

@Rob_McPhee_UK @chrisbates3 @Captain_Deltic Also I don't know if setting up single line working is harder with signalling rationalisation, fewer staff on the ground trained to operate points/act as pilots and signallers in offices miles away rather than a box at the lineside. Hopefully the roll out of ETCS might improve

@Rob_McPhee_UK @chrisbates3 @Captain_Deltic I'm sure someone in the industry can quote chapter & verse, but I believe working on (and even patrolling) open lines or adjacent to open lines is much more restricted these days. Also machines can't get out of the way as easily as a few blokes with shovels.

Interesting interview with the Royal Shakespeare Company leaders saying that the Stratford theatre is handicapped by the lack of a direct London train service. Apparently programmes in the 1960s used to give last train times. Ultra-niche open access opportunity?

@Rob_McPhee_UK @chrisbates3 @Captain_Deltic Presumably the much stricter restrictions on 'red zone working' and single line working (for good safety reasons) now make it much more difficult to run trains at the same time as work is taking place. Also an element that track and trains are no longer run by the same org.

@LittleRedTrain @chrisbates3 @Captain_Deltic They used to run overnight services on most inter-city lines in BR days so why can't they do it now? When engineering work was being done, diversions was the preferred option rather than not running a service.

@Rob_McPhee_UK @chrisbates3 @Captain_Deltic The trouble is, if you allow trains to be timetabled for later on nights where they don't need to do any/as much work, people rely on them as last connections, and then someone has to pay for buses when it *is* shut. Personally I'd *love* a later train from Brum on Sat nights!

@Rob_McPhee_UK @chrisbates3 @Captain_Deltic I believe the justification is that Didcot-Oxford-Banbury-Leamington is a key freight route from Southampton to the North so the only suitable time for extended engineering access is Sat/Sun nights, hence the early finish/late start.

@railnigel Did it last year as part of a fab @railwaytouring trip. The historic 'Kaiserwagen' is apparently due back into service imminently, after a major overhaul, so worth looking for an opportunity to travel on that.
