@japan_nobunaga Sometimes we say no, but we also dance around negative answers. Most often, "We'll see:" is meant as a "no", or "I'll think about it." It really depends on the issue, and context.

No. In Japan, we almost never say it out loud. We have two words for this. Honne — your true feelings. Tatemae — the face you show the world. So when someone says "that might be a little difficult," they very often mean no. A flat no. Everyone understands the code. Nobody says it directly. To us, this is politeness. It protects the other person from embarrassment. I have heard that in some places, saying exactly what you mean is the polite thing. That dancing around it feels fake. So tell me honestly. In your country, how do you say no? Straight out? Or wrapped in something softer?

Britain is a remarkable country. It built the Industrial Revolution, commanded the largest empire in history, invented countless technologies, and gave the world parliamentary democracy, Shakespeare, The Beatles, Robert Burns and the ability to queue politely with an ironic smile while everything falls apart. Today, however, Britain is in national decline almost entirely through bad governments who are more in thrall to servicing their corporate donors than actually functioning as public servants. Meanwhile, government ministers come and go with such speed that Britain appears to be running a political version of speed dating. The country’s approach to productivity is equally innovative. Britain possesses extraordinary natural resources and entrepreneurial talent. It then places these assets inside a governance system that punishes enterprise, bogs everything down in regulations, restrictions and high taxes. Growth is destroyed. The Japanese build a railway in the time it takes Britain to schedule a stakeholder engagement workshop. China can construct an entire metro system before Britain has finished arguing about the colour of the station bins. British infrastructure projects have three stages: Announcement. Delay. Cancellation. Trying to get a GP appointment now feels like trying to buy tickets for a reunion tour of a famous rock band. “Good news. We have an appointment available.” “When?” “October 2034.” The civil service deserves special recognition. It has perfected a revolutionary process whereby any decision can be transformed into a consultation, then into a review, then into a white paper, then into a green paper, then into a pilot scheme, then into another consultation until everyone involved has retired. Each Prime Minister arrives announcing a bold new vision. Six months later the vision is in a skip behind Whitehall and our money gets funnelled out of the country towards wars, batshit overseas funding schemes and horrendous £30bn monstrosities like carbon capture machines. Britain’s greatest strength has always been its people rather than its politicians. The country often succeeds not because government has devised a brilliant plan, but because millions of ordinary people quietly compensate for the absence of one. We deserve better than this shitshow.

@InspGadgetBlogs It’s only been in place for one month though? It only started to have an effect in April so surely far too soon to make any discernible statistical difference?

Beauty of music and nature 🌺🌺
Riona is the dog who was doused with gasoline and set on fire by her owner in Memphis. She suffered severe burns all over her body and would have died if neighbors and the rescue team hadn’t stepped in quickly. 💔✨ Mallory spent every day providing 24/7 care for Riona — changing bandages, treating her burns, and patiently showering her with love to help her regain trust in humans. After a long recovery period, Riona has gradually become healthy, happy, and full of love. She wags her tail and shows affection despite the horrific trauma she endured. This is a deeply touching story of incredible resilience and the kindness of people. 💖

Just seen this. Officially designated (by who?) as critical infrastructure. Really? I would have thought our polluted rivers/waterways, pot holed disasters of roads, railways & hospitals were critical infrastructure. Who’s asking for these data centres? It wasn’t in any manifesto

I told my boomer relatives that they should move into a flat and give me their house. They refused. Honestly, the entitlement of that generation is off the charts. 😡

@wokeandwoofing Many boomers would do this if the tax works out OK... ie the house will be a gift liable to 40% tax for someone. I guess, I mean who the hell understands what isn't taxed these days unless they've made it into a career (and still qualify their advice as subject to HMRC approval)
