President Trump, let's be honest. Syria fought Hezbollah for 12 years and couldn't defeat it. It was only after Israeli airstrikes destroyed Hezbollah's infrastructure in Damascus and provided air superiority during the opposition's advance that Assad's five-decade rule collapsed on December 8, 2024. The lesson? If you want to dismantle Hezbollah, you need Syria and Israel working together, not replacing one force with another. And if that's the goal, perhaps don't make a deal with the Islamic regime in Iran, the very regime that sponsors Hezbollah.

But does he fully appreciate what Hezbollah’s intervention in Syria meant to millions of Syrians? For many Syrians who supported the uprising against the Assad regime, Hezbollah was not merely involved in a military campaign that produced collateral damage. It was a key participant in a brutal war marked by sieges, widespread destruction, atrocities, and massacres that left deep and lasting scars. Given that history, it is difficult to believe that forces led by Sharaa would necessarily wage a more restrained or humane campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon than Israel has. After years of war, bloodshed, and accumulated resentment, the risk would not be collateral damage but revenge. Assuming that such a scenario would spare Lebanese civilians greater suffering reflects a remarkable misunderstanding of the region’s recent history.
