So what is the Jones Act? The Jones Act is a longstanding U.S. federal law that regulates domestic maritime commerce, specifically the transportation of merchandise by water between U.S. ports or points. To legally carry cargo between two points in the United States (including territories like Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and Alaska), a vessel must meet all four of these strict criteria: - Be built (or rebuilt) in the United States. - Be owned by U.S. citizens (with at least 75% U.S. ownership/control in most cases). - Be flagged / documented / registered under U.S. laws. - Be crewed primarily by U.S. citizens or permanent residents (at least 75% U.S. crew). I’ve attached an 11:30 map of every shipping vessel near Hawaii. Under the Jones Act, all the ships inbound to the US, unloading and heading back to Asia; they’re not allowed to pick up merchandise and drop it off in Hawaii. Our island state has to wait for a US ship, while thousands of others pass by. Worse, a ship that stops in LA, with a planned stop in Hawaii, those US goods can’t be added to the ship to drop off while they’re there. This is an example of a good idea (passed for national security around the world war) that has gone wrong in modern times.

@T_Q_Gardner Seriously, feed lots rules changed in the 50s to not allow feed lots with 45 or 90 miles from the coast(depends on the state). That's why all the California feed lots are over the mountains and far from the ocean. Can't do that in Hawaii. It was part of my senior thesis at UH.
