I don’t yet have a large base of paid subs, so it would be more expensive than what I’m paying on Substack… + considering I manage sponsorships directly..

With that being said, many forget the most important reason why Substack is so powerful: Yes, it removes the technical challenges of "distributing an article" so I can focus on writing, and X could easily reproduce that.
But Substack's real power is that it let's me "own" my followers.
I know their emails. I can export those emails.
I can write to them independently.
With X, they completely control who I reach and how I reach them.
Still, it's hard to imagine X ever surrendering that control.
So until then...

I love to write. I’ve been posting on Substack for a few years now. My pieces get maybe 30 likes. On a good day. (Mind you, I’ve got just under 10,000 subscribers over there versus almost 150,000 followers here, so there’s that.) But what surprised me here is how many people on this platform still care about long-form content. The response from this is making me want to use the articles feature more.

they'll routinely send them emails without your consent to download the notes app and follow other writers
sure - you can export those emails
but substack owns that relationship now
your readers = their users
