Ayatollah Khamenei was more willing to die than to compromise. Days after his killing, no one in the regime currently has the legitimacy, authority, or the will to reverse a 47-year culture of resistance. At the moment the regime appears more prepared to break than to bend.

Khamenei can be despised and mourned simultaneously. Few will miss him, but now the system (should it survive) can move on untethered without him. He held back reform and reformists since 2000, moderation internally, and accommodation with the West. His second revolution,, launched in 2019, failed to restore legitimacy. He died as a martyr in a resistance war with the US and Israel, which, by my view, was the only face-saving way to go out.
