Pitching staff prediction 2: Starters- Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, MacKenzie Gore, Jack Leiter, Jacob Latz Relievers: Chris Martin, Robert Garcia, Cole Winn, Carter Baumler, Tyler Alexander, Jakob Junis, Gavin Collyer, Peyton Gray. If Sborz was averaging over 94 ish I would probably put him in here, but he’s not there yet. Maybe he can get there he’s just taking it slow. I like what I have seen from Peyton Gray this spring, and he can get stretched out to 2-3 innings I think.

@minor_caleb Rough outing today for sure, still got time. And he has two options so he can start in AAA if needed. I’m not giving up on him yet

@MattHarris If you throw 99 and dont command it the margin of error is the same as if you are throwing 93-94

@LogmanIsJ Definitely, but you can hide that flaw better when you throw 99. It’s not to say he can’t get outs anymore, but more so that he’s lost his margin for error.

It’s not where he was before his shoulder injury, but this is certainly the best Josh Sborz has looked since then. Reduced velocity coupled with his subpar fastball command have me hesitant to put him in any high leverage situation, but this version of Josh Sborz can definitely get you outs at the big league level.

Cole Winn closer agenda has regained its momentum. Cole Winn had a very efficient 9-pitch-inning in relief this afternoon in his inning of work. Cole only got up to 95 on his fastball, but threw 77.8% strikes and all 3 groundouts were 78mph exit velocity or lower. The reason Cole is currently in the lead for me for that closer role mainly stems from the confidence he gained last year over the course of the entire season, but also from his extensive arsenal. Cole throws 6 pitches with 5 of them grading out as plus. I think having a large arsenal as a closer is something that’s quite underrated, as it lets you have multiple options in a variety of situations, instead of being a guy who relies on one main pitch and if you don’t have feel for it on a certain day then you don’t really have any answers for that. All those factors combined with his increased command this spring has me very confident in his abilities. It’s still a small sample size relative to last season, but what I’ve seen so far has given me confidence to say at this time I think Cole Winn should be the closer for this season.

Calling an outing on March 4th embarrassing is the real embarrassment. Pitchers work through new pitches and different sequencing this early in spring. By the same logic we should fire Degrom into the sun or Evo and Gore after their first outings
Right on Rangers@RightOnRangers

Kumar Rocker doing little to nothing to inspire for an Opening Day roster spot. No disrespect to Team Brazil, but an outing like this is embarrassing. A home run allowed, only one strikeout, and needed nearly 40 pitches to get through two innings.

@LogmanIsJ @ProspectTimes Yeah…still not good. His velocity is slightly up, but it’s still just nowhere near where it was. Shoulder injuries are just killers for velocity, and it’s extremely difficult to get that back if it’s not rehabbed properly.

Sigh. Apparently no one wants the 5th spot in the rotation. Jacob Latz hangs a slider to Cole Young, and it’s quickly 2-0 Mariners here in the 1st.

That’s a great shout, honestly I didn’t even think to look into Dane’s numbers just because there were other guys I was more excited about. These are definitely some impressive numbers from Dane, but again it’s important to remember that it’s a low sample size so grades can be a bit misleading. Another thing is Dane has always had pretty good breaking balls, but if he is actually able to sustain that velo bump over the course of an entire season, then he may actually force his way into some big league innings. The most glaring issue with Dane has always been walks. He’s only had one professional season with a BB% lower than 10%, and had a Zone% of 43.6% last year. Even with these impressive stuff grades today, he still had a Zone% of 38.9%. Again, low sample size. However, that velocity and stuff bump is definitely eye catching and will have me paying closer attention to Dane after he struggled in his first AAA season last year.

Better late than never, but let’s talk about some of the pitchers who appeared in the Rangers spring training game today. ⚾️ Jack Leiter • It was a bit of a struggle for Jack today, but spring results should really always be taken with a grain of salt. Jack’s outings sort of hinge on his fastball command, because it’s what sets up all of his secondary pitches. It was just too inconsistent. • That in combination with early long at bats just kind of kept him out of rhythm. There was also an increased emphasis from Jack to try and throw a good amount of cutters as well, as he continues polishing that pitch. Not an outing to be concerned about, as almost all spring outings usually aren’t. ⚾️ Carter Baumler • Carter Baumler continues to impress, as I feel like a broken record typing that out. Baumler entered the contest in the 3rd inning to take over for Jack Leiter after he came out to face one more batter before hitting his pitch count. Baumler ended up going 1.2 innings (his first time pitching more than 1 inning this spring) and struck out 1 without allowing an earned run. • Baumler was a little wild with his fastball today, but he was able to utilize a lot of those misses above the zone to throw his curveball for strikes at a Zone% clip of 60%. While Baumler might be too green to immediately be handed the closer role, I think he’s certainly solidified his slot in the big league bullpen. ⚾️ Luis Curvelo • Luis Curvelo entered the game today in the 6th inning. He gave up a single on his first batter, and then proceeded to strike out the side on 9 pitches. Curvelo really commanded all 3 of his pitches well at the bottom of and just below the zone. • It’s another appearance for Curvelo where he’s posted a strike% of greater than 70%, which is exactly what I wanted to see this spring. He’s one of my most underrated arms in the bullpen that people tend to forget since he wasn’t given many opportunities in high leverage situations, but if he can keep up with his increased command as we get deeper into spring, he make just work himself into opportunities like that in the near future. ⚾️ Josh Trentadue • Josh Trentadue has been one of my most anticipated appearances of this spring. He’s been receiving a lot of buzz within the organization since last season, and it’s only built more and more as spring has started. He struck out 2 and walked 1 in his 1 inning of work in the 7th. • The walk feels almost like an anomaly because it was a 4 pitch walk on 4 pretty uncompetitive pitches, but then he followed it up with a strikeout and a quick groundout. There was a slight tendency today to leave the slider and changeup arm-side, as he probably just wasn’t getting through the ball enough. However, with small sample sizes like these I don’t want to make a generalization that that’s something Trentadue does, it was just something minor I noticed today. I love spring training, as it signifies baseball is back and we get to see data on a lot of minor league guys that haven’t pitched with statcast before, but it’s definitely important to make the distinction and keep in mind that it is in fact just spring. Trying to take away anything of note from the results of spring games will probably give you a migraine. It’s much more important to look at pitch shapes, movement, velocity at times, and command.

Six spring games in — who’s leading the race for the final roster spots? Hitters: Mark Canha, Tyler Wade
Pitchers: Carter Baumler and idk maybe Ryan Brasier because he is a veteran. I’ll track this after each game.
