@Steve_Yegge Maybe tell your buddy to do some actual work and to stop spreading absolute nonsense. This post is completely false and just pure clickbait.

Currently walking around central London during off peak hours without a care in the world. Is there anything as good as garden leave / PILON? I doubt it!

My general rule is: If you can afford to buy something twice, then you can afford it. If you can’t, you can’t afford it. £20k car. Could you buy it twice? Agree?

£35K salary sounds alright until you work out what it actually costs you. You're not getting paid for 8 hours. You're selling your entire day. The commute. The lunch hour you can't use. The 2 hours on the couch recovering when you get home. Add it all up and your real hourly rate drops to about £10.58. The person who made your coffee this morning earned more per hour than you did. They just didn't have to sit through a team meeting first.

@sue3563 @NewsonTed That’s true but the key difference is the lack of wealth held by young people now. Young people in 1950/60/70, etc, had wealth. Since then wealth disparity has grown enormously between young and old

@LondonWageSlave @NewsonTed And when the old were young they also paid the pensions of the generation before - that’s the way it works...

🧵 Why the triple lock on pensions must be scrapped: The triple lock guarantees the state pension rises each year by whichever is highest: Inflation, average earnings growth, or 2.5%. It sounds sensible, in reality, its a fiscal time bomb that no politician wants to defuse.

@sue3563 @NewsonTed Given so much of policy in this country is nothing but a thinly veiled transfer of wealth from young to old, it’s hard not to think otherwise

@LondonWageSlave @NewsonTed I’m not a pensioner yet but do you really think the vast majority of us don’t care about the future our children and grandchildren are inheriting? SM are whipping up this division between the generations which is not borne out in reality.

@NewsonTed Cynically I am wondering if they’ll care at that point considering they might not be around that long to see or feel the consequences? NHS spending aside of course given they’re the main users

@LondonWageSlave We can always hope. Unfortunately I think pensioners will only start to wake up when ballooning spending starts to mean we can't fund the NHS, defence, and our energy grid upkeep. It will hurt.

Totally agreed. This is so well put. Although I’m unsure where you fall if for example you earn £5M a year as a partner at a law firm but also own many rental properties. Are they still working class given they own plenty of assets? What assets count in this categorisation, etc?

@I_Am_Yain There are only 3 classes of people in the UK. Benefit class. Working class. Asset class.

@2147mill Passive income that is greater than your burn. If you earn £75k a year through your pension and investments but spend £45k, you’re rich. If you earn £200k a year through your job but spend all of it, you aren’t rich

@2147mill VUAG. I don’t buy into sentiment that you should invest more elsewhere. As long as America remains the world’s most powerful country and retains their business environment, we’ll all be fine with VUAG

@LondonWageSlave @lukerobertblack Who’s ‘they’? It’s just as bad to categorise all boomers together like that, as it is to label the young as lazy. Many boomers (and those of us not quite that age) have adult kids, who work hard, struggling with all the things cited. We more than understand the situation.

What I find depressing is you see a young person post saying “housing is too expensive”, which by assessments is a fair conclusion. Yet within minutes a deluge of Reform activists over 60 yo will descend calling them (and all Gen Z) lazy and thick. It’s the aggression too. Why?

@DishSmichri @lukerobertblack Do you think it’s possible that the work ethic and spending habits are different precisely because housing is so unaffordable? If it’s practically impossible to save £30K for a deposit (and far more in London), then many young people feel like they may as well spend some money

@LondonWageSlave @lukerobertblack Most pensioners will have adult children. They see the work ethic difference first hand. And they see the spending habits too. And yes, we judge. It’s our fault, we raised your generation and set the expectation. #pensioners
