@stewarthome1 Talking about the reforgotten, this reminded me of Robert Westerby’s “Wide Boys Never Work” from 1937. I read the 2008 reissue with the Iain Sinclair intro, but must have been a library copy because I don’t own it. So I just went online and bought it.

'Night and the City' (1950) was adapted to screen based on the novel by Gerald Kersh. Jules Dassin who was under the suspicion for his political beliefs, never read the book while making the film. He was under pressure to finish the movie since he feared it might be his last.

@Crisopera1 The book is by Gerald Kersh, the best selling author in Britain in the 1940s. I read his remarkable Prelude To A Certain Midnight. Highest recommendation.

I remember thinking Irvine Welsh was a bit over the top with Freddy Royle in 1996's "Ecstasy". But I know a lot more about England now. standard.co.uk/news/uk/did-ir…

R.I.P. Britt Allcroft. As a very young girl she was selected by BBC to be an “ideas person” for young people’s programming. She was paired with Kenny Lynch to come up with something. They delivered Get It, Got It, Good. Later Britt spotted an opportunity to buy the rights to the Thomas The Tank Engine character from the author Rev W Awdry. With Ringo Starr narrating Thomas & friends became a children’s TV sensation & Britt became extremely wealthy.

@joeflanagan1 @tonyhonickberg If you think this has soul and personality which I totally agree with, you need to read the literature from that time by East End writers. Literature worth reviving and returned to shelves. Look out for @London_Books who are doing that.

Roll up, roll up. Change is good - is it f**k. John King argues that digitisation poses a bigger threat than Orwell, Huxley & Bradbury ever imagined. 1984 will soon be the good old days. spiked-online.com/2023/10/25/we-…

@cliveoconnell I’d like to take credit, Clive, but I think that evocative passage may be from John King’s The Football Factory. (There are a lot of Kings & Knights in this thread).
