I think that’s a deeply nuanced and discussion-worthy topic… The Christianisation of Rome did not take place by military conquest. The very fact the story of Jesus’ ministry took place within Roman territory meant it could even be viewed as a domestic religion and this argument was made. In-fact, Christianity was seen as a safer bet than the popular alternative, Mithraism.. a cult with an Iranian god as its central object of worship. Julian (the Apostate) did argue that Christianity was foreign. The language of the Roman Catholic Church is Latin. Before the Edict of Milan, Rome was religiously pluralistic with a patchwork of de-centralised religious traditions but with no clear national religious identity. At the time of the Arab conquest, Persia had a relatively homogenous and centralised domestic religious framework. It had a single unified religious identity. In the following centuries, Arabic replaced Persian as the lingua franca. There are interesting parallels and several important differences. Thank you for your take. Ancient Persia should be far more central to how we tell the story of civilization. This is the Gate of All Nations at Persepolis, built under Xerxes I in the 5th century BCE, where empire, art, language, and power met in stone. Yet Persia is still too often reduced to a footnote in Greek history instead of recognized as one of the ancient world’s greatest cultural centers. Why do you think ancient Persia is still so overlooked?
