Matthew Wright proves our point on LBC this morning. The official definition of Islamophobia — now repackaged as “anti-Muslim hostility” — is already silencing legitimate debate and criticism of Islam and its practices. It amounts to a de facto Muslim blasphemy law. The treatment of Nick Timothy by Labour MPs is deeply sinister. The Shadow Justice Secretary criticised mass Muslim prayer in Trafalgar Square, was reported to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, branded “Islamophobic”, and faced calls to resign from Labour MPs and even the Prime Minister. This morning, FSU External Affairs Officer @_ConnieShaw was invited on to discuss the comments made by Nick Timothy. Matthew Wright didn’t want to hear it. After the interview, he told another guest he had “closed her down” because she was “putting out anti-Muslim hatred”. Farcical. In a crowded field, Matthew is this week’s runner up as for chief enforcer of the blasphemy law this week. 👏

@anon_opin Using "pet" as a verb (to stroke an animal) has been standard in Britain since the 1500s. While "pat" is also common, "petting" isn't a modern American import; it’s an original British usage that Americans happen to use too

I'm getting really pissed off with all the Americanisms that are creeping their way into British society. It's a dog LEAD, no you can't pet my dog, you can PAT it, and no, you can't get a coffee, not unless you're going to go around the counter and make it yourself.

Really enjoying this Brazilian mini-series on Netflix. If there was an award for the least enigmatic title, this would win. It's a true story about a really scary event in 1987, when some scrap metal dealers unknowingly released a lethal dose of Caesium-137 into their city.

@BerisfordRon I really loved it and bought the DVD years later. When my son was little, he made a very hungover, posh American woman watch it with him. I don't know what she made of it. I looked up the cast and was sad (but not that surprised) to see that Doughnut died from a heart attack.

@BerisfordRon Rising Damp is my favourite. Apart from the great writing, the cast are just perfect, particularly Rigsby and Miss Jones. Other favourites are The Good Life, Porridge, George and Mildred and Fawlty Towers. The shows that haven't stood the test of time are On the Buses and LOTSW.

Hi @SW_Help I have had to twice move seats on your 14.12 service from Waterloo to Shepperton as there are people playing music out of their speakers very loudly. There’s a person in Carriage 10 with a speaker out playing at high volume. Please HELP passengers deal with this

@MbarkCherguia I don't doubt that the sentence is politically motivated as a deterrent to others, but I'm not sorry. She comes from a privileged background and picked an easy, pointless target which did nothing to further her cause and damaged the frame. Just Stop Oil Painting? Grow up.

@SamLovesHummus @grahamscheper I think he had an original voice as young composer, when he was occasionally billed as "Johnny Williams" and Jaws was masterly, but after Star Wars, the Hollywood system encoraged a more conservative approach. Jerry Goldsmith also became less innovative after the mid-70s.

@Lord_Steerforth @grahamscheper Williams undoubtedly lifted from Holst, Stravinsky etc, but it goes too far to say he has no original voice - his jazz piano expertise clearly influences his writing, his use of polychords, octatonic harmonic and chromatic planing, etc, are more than the sum of their influences.

Would someone in the Classical music sphere explain to me why composers of movie soundtracks get sneered at?
I find that kind of music extremely enjoyable, even for movies I’ve never seen, and structurally I really cannot tell the difference between eg. Williams and Holst.
