@SamaHoole Same in teaching. Told what to do by a government official with no background or qualifications in education. No one asks the teachers.

A British school dinner in 1975 was cooked on-site, from whole ingredients, by a dinner lady who knew, without consulting a nutritional database, what a growing child needed to eat. The dinner was: roast beef, gravy from the drippings, boiled potatoes, cabbage, and sponge pudding with custard made from eggs and milk. Or shepherd's pie from real mince. Or liver and onions. Or fish on Friday, battered and fried in beef dripping. In a single sitting: haem iron from the meat, calcium from the custard, B12 from the liver, vitamin A from the gravy fat, vitamin D from the eggs, zinc from the beef, omega-3 from the fish, collagen from the gravy, complete protein from every component, and roughly 800 calories dense enough to carry a child through an afternoon of running around a playground in January. Then the system changed. In the 1980s and 1990s, local authority catering was outsourced. On-site kitchens closed. Dinner ladies were made redundant. Central production kitchens began manufacturing meals reheated in convection ovens. The roast beef became a turkey twizzler. The shepherd's pie became a pre-formed disc of processed potato and reconstituted meat product. The liver disappeared entirely. The fish was coated in breadcrumbs and fried in vegetable oil. The custard was made from powder, water, and yellow colouring. The sponge pudding was replaced by a yoghurt tube. Jamie Oliver's 2005 campaign filmed children who could not identify a tomato. Kitchens where the only equipment was a deep fryer and a microwave. Menus that contained less nutritional value in a full week than the 1975 dinner contained in a single sitting. The government pledged reform. But the on-site kitchen did not come back. The dinner lady did not come back. The roast beef and the liver and the custard made from eggs did not come back. The 1975 dinner lady, who had no nutritional qualification and had never heard of a DIAAS score, was producing, at approximately 30p per serving, a meal that contained more bioavailable nutrition than anything the modern system produces at three times the cost. She has been replaced by a supply chain. The supply chain is more expensive. The children are less well fed. The dinner lady knew what she was doing. Nobody asked her.

A film crew arrived on Tuesday with a drone, a budget, and a 4,000-word researcher's brief about the environmental damage caused by British beef farming. What they found was Gerald. Gerald was in the south corner. 9:30am - The drone went up. Gerald watched the drone for approximately three seconds, concluded it wasn't interesting, and went back to grazing. Thirty seconds of footage: bull, ignoring drone, eating grass. Not the footage. 11:00am - The researcher asked the farmer about Gerald's methane output. The farmer explained the biogenic cycle. The researcher said that wasn't in her brief. The farmer said it was in the peer-reviewed literature. The brief did not contain the peer-reviewed literature. 12:30pm - The cameraman asked if Gerald could do something. The farmer: "Like what?" The cameraman: "Something more active." Gerald lay down in the south corner. Gerald had been awake since 5am and had grazed eleven acres. Gerald found the cameraman's schedule irrelevant. 1:00pm - The producer walked the south corner with an ecologist who was there on a separate Natural England survey. The ecologist pointed out the seven wildflower species. The Bombus humilis. The dung beetle activity. The lapwing pair. The producer: "Is this because of the cow?" Ecologist: "Yes." Producer: "Can we use that?" Ecologist: "You're making a film about Gerald being a problem." Producer: "...Can we use it anyway?" 4:00pm - They left. The documentary has a two-star rating on streaming. The south corner has a UK priority bee species. Gerald is in the south corner. Gerald has not seen the documentary. Gerald does not have a streaming subscription.

Had a similar thing with my daughter. So their school have 4 working toilets for 500 girls. They have other toilets but these are locked. Then when students ask to go to the toilet in lesson they are told no. Let alone it is a human right! This is what the DFE guidance is. These schools are turning it to such bad actors. Worst then prison in some cases. More needs to be done.

So she went on her trip, attended the wedding, and came back on Monday. That same day, HR called her into a meeting and told her she had abandoned her responsibilities and had shown a lack of commitment to the team. She was completely confused and asked, “What are you talking about? My PTO was approved a month ago.” Honestly, if I were her, I would have been losing my mind. HR then said, “Your manager expressed concerns about your dedication, and we’ve decided to let you go effective immediately.” She asked to see the documentation supporting that decision. They couldn’t produce anything. No written warnings. No performance issues on file. Nothing. Just her manager’s word. Then she calmly pulled out her phone and said, “I actually have a recording of the entire Teams conversation where he approved my PTO and tried to guilt me into canceling. It’s all right here.” HR’s face went completely white. They suddenly said they would “look into the situation” and ended the meeting. That was four days ago, and nobody has heard anything since. She’s currently talking to a lawyer. The moral of the story? Some companies will absolutely try to gaslight you—so document and record everything.

My coworker just got fired for literally the pettiest reason. She was just terminated, and honestly it has me a little scared now. This girl was one of the top performers on our team. She consistently hit her metrics and never caused any problems. Last month, she submitted a PTO request for her sister’s wedding with three weeks’ notice. The manager approved it in the system, so she booked her flight and hotel—none of it was refundable. Then, two days before she was supposed to leave, her manager messaged her on Teams. He said, “Hey, I know you have PTO scheduled, but we really need you for this client presentation. Can you push your trip?” She replied, “No, I can’t. It’s my sister’s wedding. Everything is already booked.” He responded, “Well, this is a really important client, and I need you to be a team player here.” She stood firm and said, “No, I’m taking my approved PTO.” After that, he didn’t respond.
