Remarkable speech from @MarkJCarney, urging allies to stop playing along with great-power intimidation. Compliance won’t buy safety, he warns. Stop appeasing bullies. Carney draws applause. Citing Václav Havel, he says it’s "time for companies and countries to take their signs down." Under communism, ordinary people displayed slogans like "Workers of the world, unite!" even when they didn’t believe them, rituals of compliance meant to avoid trouble. Coercion, Havel argued, wasn’t always enforced through violence, but through quiet, everyday participation in a lie. Carney receives a standing ovation at the end of his speech. Extraordinary to see Canada asserting this kind of moral and strategic leadership, something we haven’t witnessed on the world stage in decades, especially at a moment when we have so much to lose if Trump chooses retaliation.

@umichvoter I am from Ithaca/Tompkins Co and I think a lot of Cortland CO works in Tompkins but that could be dead wrong. Ithaca spillover is a theory.

Forty point difference with undecided voters on their abortion answers. Widest gap I’ve ever seen in debate dials.

"He's going to talk about immigration a lot tonight even when it's not the subject being raised." This is exactly how you try and stop a gish galloper. And now she's hitting him on Hannibal Lector and windmills causing cancer and him being boring. He is dying inside right now.

Hey, folks, I am being told that Twitter has shadow-banned me, and that you can't find my account when you search for it. Is that happening to you when you search me up? Is this true @elonmusk @lindayaX @support? I thought this was the home of free speech, lol.

Growing up, I learned to be generous toward my neighbors, compromise without compromising my values, and to work for the common good. @KamalaHarris and I both believe in that common good – in that fundamental promise of America. We’re ready to fight for it. And like she says: when we fight, we win.

There's no 8/7 deadline. You're making that up. Ohio passed legislation so that whomever is nominated at the Democratic Convention will be on the November ballot. Have some guts and defend your party's ability to follow its own process. And stop lying to the American public.
Jaime Harrison@harrisonjaime

Nate, in all due respect, I really don’t care what you do. The bottomline is this … we WILL meet the August 7th deadline and our nominee WILL be on the ballot in Ohio this November. So you and your “experts” can discuss that as much as you please. I’m done with this back and forth.

A lot right now hinges on whether Democrats understand Biden's modest post-debate drop in polls as evidence that the debate didn't matter or evidence that Biden was already polling near the floor for a 100% name ID Democrat running against Donald Trump. Evidence for the latter is that Biden was, and still is, polling well behind Dem Senate and House candidates. There are a lot of voters willing to vote for a Democrat who don't want to vote for Biden. We can see them. Evidence for the former is that subbing in Newsom/Whitmer/Klobuchar/Buttigieg etc doesn't lead to dramatically different numbers in head-to-head polls. I've talked to pollsters who say this is just name ID but it's made the Biden team's job a lot easier. What's telling is that frontline House Dems and purple state Senate Dems are the ones shifting against Biden, fearing him a drag on their chances. If you'd asked me a year ago whether Biden would have more support from the Squad than from Michael Bennet and Tammy Baldwin and Jon Tester, well, I know what I'd have picked. But I'd have been wrong.

What I’m hearing from congressional Democrats about President Biden is this: He has done nothing to allay their fears. But his defiance — and fury — has been enough to stay their hand. This is arguably the worst of all worlds: Democrats realize they are drifting toward a grim march to defeat led by a candidate they’ve lost faith in. But they don’t have a plan to do anything about it. Congressional Democrats aren’t yet at the point where they’re going to abandon Biden en masse. Nor are they at the point where their confidence in him is restored. They need some process that’ll get them to one side or the other, and fast. Here's one suggestion, building off something Senator Bernie Sanders said: nytimes.com/2024/07/11/opi…

I sat down with Joe Kahn of the NYT. We spoke abt the paper’s emphasis on “independence,” what sorts of reporters are particularly valued at this moment in time, & the paper’s various internal dramas. I also asked about his family foundation’s donations. 1/newyorker.com/news/the-new-y…

The president is rightfully proud of his record. But he is dangerously out-of-touch with the concerns people have about his capacitiies moving forward and his standing in this race. Four years ago at this time, he was 10 points ahead of Trump. Today, he is six points behind.
