@poiThePoi thank you for the detail, friend! I wonder how this translates to boards?

@LudditeDesign I did a lot of renting this year, but that's because I wanted to try a lot of skis. Hence why I have been on pretty much all of those. /Seriously, if it's "variable conditions", gamble on a Rustler 9 and ask for edge sharpening.

@poiThePoi Yeah, renting makes zero sense even past one day, for me. SoCal is shockingly consistent - rocks have almost never been an issue.

@LudditeDesign So if you're looking at skis and honestly when rentals are $100/day, a spring sales set is a week of rentals: * Ice but also bumps ski * Resort pow ski (tracks) If you head back east, also grab a short-radius carver in ~80m underfoot for ice, chop, and crud but NO bumps

@poiThePoi I suppose also going up as much as you do, it totally makes sense to diversify. Goals.

@poiThePoi Holy shit dude $3k Alpine board versus average carving board was shockingly similar. I bet at the extreme, it makes a difference - I’m not there yet 😅

@tszzl @karpathy Breaking Bad and The Pitt have whole seasons. You want a television show. Can you think of any technically-detailed movies that captured the audience? Yes, I’d have liked more of the science, but at 2h36m, what would you have left out? Maybe the onboard immersive earth videos?

Saw Project Hail Mary last night with wife, son, and his girlfriend. All 9/10 stars for them. It kept my wife's interest the whole time, and she is absolutely not a sci-fi enjoyer. She loved Rocky, and the ending (the best, most unexpected outcome).

I think this is giving up too easily and let me tell you why: I don’t think the filmmaker has to lose the audience to communicate the feeling of “techne”. I think back to breaking bad when the duo is making meth in the underground lab or the trailer for Nolan’s odyssey movie which depicts the Trojan horse scene in extremely high level of minute to minute execution detail or the ER show “The Pitt” all of these are (or will be) relatively popular, don’t bog the unprepared median viewer down in an explicit scientific lecture of some kind, and still manage to communicate the feeling of techne or realistic solving of problems in high pressure environments. this feeling comes from directorial skill, pacing, the construction of scenes, etc that reveal a mind underlying the simulation logic of the movie that you respect. I did not get this sense from PHM there are other things to like about the movie, but i overall grade more harshly rather than less in cases like this when there is already a source material, the budget is huge, and when im aware the rest of twitter is going to say only positive things about it :D

project hail mary was unfortunately a middling adaptation of a good book. the script has the unfortunate affect of “language model populism” - where every single line has to be some sort of punched up comedic zinger yet still unremarkable. visuals were uninspired and trite and more or less identical to other space movies. everything good about the film comes from the wonderful world scaffolding of the book and the hard science fiction of it all that lets you suspend disbelief on the alien rocky the movie doesn’t really try to get into the xenolinguistic stuff even at the depth the book tries (someone called it “arrival for idiots” which unfortunately hit ) the thing that elevated the book is the commitment to a hard science fiction engineeringporn fiction at a level nobody else is able to write. the direction of the movie doesn’t really convey the same feeling successfully, and you’re left with flat characters, an alien that is more human than several humans i know, and a marvel populism gosling and the german woman are great as actors, but this movie will not be remembered in a year. it is disappointing to see people do so little with a quarter billion, insane acting talent, and incredible source IP

spoilers: I wish they spent more time explaining: - the astrophage (great job with the tape and planets in the beginning) - how the engines worked - the drama on earth before the voyage - the high-school science Grace constantly did - the space amnesia & psychosis issues

Ask for sci-fi book recommendations. Is it fantasy or hard? They don't understand. Explain the difference between fantasy and hard. It is good book sir! I read the book. It's fantasy.
