However, it cannot be overlooked that the persecution of Christians remains one of the most widespread human rights crises today, affecting over 380 million believers worldwide. They suffer high or extreme levels of discrimination, violence and oppression because of their faith. This phenomenon impinges on approximately one in seven Christians globally, and it worsened in 2025 due to ongoing conflicts, authoritarian regimes and religious extremism. Sadly, all of this demonstrates that religious freedom is considered in many contexts more as a “privilege” or concession than a fundamental human right.
Here, I would especially call to mind the many victims of violence, including religiously motivated violence in Bangladesh, in the Sahel region and in Nigeria, as well as those of the serious terrorist attack last June on the parish of Saint Elias in Damascus. Nor do I forget the victims of jihadist violence in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique.
At the same time, we must not forget a subtle form of religious discrimination against Christians, which is spreading even in countries where they are in the majority, such as in Europe or the Americas. There, they are sometimes restricted in their ability to proclaim the truths of the Gospel for political or ideological reasons, especially when they defend the dignity of the weakest, the unborn, refugees and migrants, or promote the family.

He lamented discrimation and persecution of Christians, condemning attacks on places of worship.
“I think especially of Bangladesh, Nigeria, Mozambique, Sudan, and other countries from which we frequently hear of attacks on communities and places of worship,” he said. “God is a merciful Father who desires peace among all His children!”
The Pope expressed his closeness with families in the North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
On Friday evening, terrorists killed around 20 civilians at a Church-run hospital in the village of Byambwe.

Não saiu na imprensa brasileira o que foi conversado entre o Papa e os 70 bispos da Nigéria que ele recebeu no começo março na visita Ad Limina Apostolorum em audiência privada, mas certamente eles não devem ter conversado sobre o BBB, já que em geral o objetivo da visita ad limina é que os bispos relatem à Santa Sé a situação de suas dioceses.
E foi exatamente isso que o arcebispo de Kaduna, Matthew Ndagoso, chefe da Conferência dos Bispos Católicos da Nigéria disse à EWTN: “Antes de virmos a Roma, nós, bispos, enviamos relatórios sobre nossas dioceses ao Vaticano, e o resumo foi entregue ao Santo Padre. Mas além do que foi escrito, falamos com ele sobre a violência, as insurgências e as dificuldades que enfrentamos como apóstolos no terreno”.
E confirmado pelo arcebispo de Lagos, Adewale Martins: "a questão da violência contra os cristãos foi abordada com muita ênfase pelo papa".
