Nick Timothy and Nigel Farage are right, and Sadiq Khan and Keir Starmer are wrong. Small groups of people, of whatever religion, praying in public places is fine. And as a Christian country we should allow a special privilege for churches to lead services in our national spaces, like the Palm Sunday celebration that happens in Trafalgar Square. What we don't want is mass ritual observances intended to claim the civic realm for another religion, or assert the domination of another culture over our own Christian traditions. What happens in our national spaces is not neutral. People use Trafalgar Square, for celebrations and demonstrations, to make a point about the kind of country they want us to be. The Palm Sunday pageant reminds us of who we are - not as individuals (many or most of us don't identify as Christians at all) but as a national community, with the roots of our institutions in the ground of the Bible and our most solemn communal moments, from coronations to funerals, mediated through the liturgies of the Church. A mass Adhan held there, or in any town square, is making a different point: that Britain is not a Christian country, and that - inshallah - one day it shall be Muslim. This is unacceptable to the British public and indeed incompatible with our constitution. As ever with these debates, the issue is partly one of kind and partly one of degree. There is an issue with Islam itself as a religion which in most interpretations does not admit of pluralism or freedom of conscience, and therefore is inherently aggrandising, including over territory. But with a bit of confidence and a bit of toleration we could handle that - if it were not for the issue of degree. It is the scale of Islam in Britain, and the ambition of its leaders for greater scale, that makes the problem. The numbers of people who assembled for the adhan in Trafalgar Square, clearly and openly claiming the territory for a faith with no connection (indeed, with strong doctrinal disagreement) with the model of Western liberal democracy that Britain has developed and exported to the world - that is the problem. The numbers, whether everyone there understood it this way or not (and I suspect many did), convey an explicit threat to the foundations of our country. Being relaxed about other people's religion is a good thing, a very British thing. I don't mind modern druids dancing around Stonehenge in my constituency (arguably, though the historicity is tenuous, they have a claim to the place). I don't mind small groups of Hindus or Buddhists or Muslims demonstrating the reality of Britain's religious toleration by worshiping in Trafalgar Square. But let's not kid ourselves about this adhan, or pretend that we're just seeing another harmless expression of Britain's religious diversity. We are seeing an abuse of liberalism, led by people who are not themselves liberal; or - let us imagine they are acting in good faith - who are themselves deceived about what they are doing. It should not happen again. And it would be good to hear the Church of England say so.

No religion should be beyond humour. But Labour’s mask slips when they criticise a light hearted comment. It does not sit with the sectarian, authoritarian state they have tried to build in Great Britain, which seeks to divide, dominate and erode British culture. Their project is failing, just as it did in the Gorton and Denton by election.

It took less than 30 seconds for Sarah Pochin to start making jokes about Muslims after her autocue broke. The same Sarah Pochin who said it drives her mad seeing too many black and Asian people on TV adverts.

Today, Restore Britain councillors walked out of a debate on illegal migration in Kent and refused to vote to declare a migration emergency. They walked out alongside Labour, Lib Dem and Green councillors. They are not serious about fixing Britain.

What we witnessed in London at the historic Trafalgar Square, in a country built on Judeo-Christian values, was a group of people attempting dominance over our capital city and our culture. We are not going to surrender everything that was built over centuries and defended at great cost in two world wars for us to be a free, independent nation. The British people will not put up with this any longer — simple as.

I’m writing this through some rather thick tears, but this, more than anything said in the House today sums up the evil that has happened just now. The unborn child is alive and the least they should expect from society is at least one pair of loving arms.

@jowhite__ Good luck retaining the Red Wall if clowns like Khan get their way, Jo
Antonello Guerrera@antoguerrera

EXCLUSIVE. For the first time, @MayorofLondon @SadiqKhan asks @Keir_Starmer to not only “rejoin the EU Customs Union and the Single Market this Parliament”, but also to “fight the next general election with a clear manifesto commitment: a vote for Labour means we would rejoin the European Union”, without a second #Brexit referendum. 🇬🇧 🇪🇺 Full interview - with many other topics - tomorrow in @repubblica

Without the Red Wall, Labour will be forever in opposition. My call to Government is to keep listening to my constituents and deliver on their priorities. We will not get the social and economic change we all desire from the benches on the other side.
Luke Akehurst@lukeakehurst

All the polling shows that the immigration changes the Government is proposing are popular with voters, including even those voting Green. Multiple factors are driving our weak poll numbers, esp cost of living. Being "too tough" on immigration isn't one of them, and being serious about controlling immigration is critical to holding "Red Wall" seats vs Reform.

Great to be out in #Crayford today with the hard working candidates, positive response to our plans to improve highways and pavements and deliver more real affordable housing. Many don’t want Reform and very happy with the hard working MP @danfrancis02

Max Stenner - Chair of Christian Democracy UK
I have left Reform UK, and joined Restore Britain. Reform as a party is slowly morphing into a carbon copy of the failed Conservative Party. Failed liberal cabinet ministers like Robert Jenrick, Nadine Dorries and Nadhim Zahawi are welcomed with open arms while true conservatives like Rupert Lowe are expelled for their views. Their u-turns on policy, including on welfare and on immigration, leave them unable to be trusted. Restore has grown exponentially, shown true integrity and leadership, and have a serious chance at the next election.

The attack on the Home Secretary’s migration crackdowns is very telling. @KarlTurnerMP himself admitted these boats will never get turned around. The next Labour leadership will be much further to the left, possibly dancing to the tune of the Greens! 🤦‍♂️
Politics UK@PolitlcsUK

🚨 NEW: Angela Rayner has attacked Labour’s direction tonight - Labour’s “running out of time” with its “very survival at stake” as populism rises - Migration reforms are a “breach of trust” and “un-British” - “A lot more to say” soon- “been waiting for this moment”

The mob‑like scenes at the University of St Andrews towards Reform UK student supporters were utterly disgraceful. Together with @reformparty_uk Scotland Leader, @Malcolm_Offord I have written to the university demanding action to uphold free speech and protect every student’s right to express their views without fear. Intimidating young people for their political beliefs is unacceptable in any free and democratic society.

“Reform UK don’t go far enough on immigration.” Rubbish. Let’s have a look at Reform’s policies on immigration. ONE BY ONE. No slogans. No clickbait rhetoric. Just a clear and workable plan to fix Britain’s broken immigration system once and for all 🇬🇧
