@LukeADesign I feel you. I used to spend hours tweaking designs for each client. Then I discovered AI-powered design tools and my life changed.

For years I've been doing this manually for each logo project. Start with an Illustrator file with all my favourite fonts ready to be replaced with the brand name. Or taking a screenshot of the logomark and scrolling through google fonts with the screenshot placed next to the type... Now, @joshpuckett has saved me, and every other designer, hours on each project by creating a tool called Locale. Insane work

@Dave_Geoghegan_ Long gone are the days you'd spend hours manually installing type to check to see if its right

@LukeADesign automating the initial logo exploration saves the most tedious part. the creative decisions still need a human eye but iteration speed goes from days to minutes

@LukeADesign Oh yes! Thank you so much for this tip! 🥰 So many more or less wasted hours in my life for finding a fitting font. 🫣 And I am so picky ...

@LukeADesign i assume you'll be using this internally only and not for review-ready assets, right?

@LukeADesign Nah it’s actually a nightmare - I typically need client alignment, so I’ll design in Figma, then copy assets piecemeal as a combo of SVG and PNG into Affinity and rearrange it back into its original layout so I can export it as a CMYK PDF 😭

Figma is terrible for print. Might sound controversial, but it's a fact, and those who work in print will agree. Figma operates natively in RGB, a colour space built for screens. Print operates in CMYK, what looks right on your monitor won't look the same when it comes off a press. The colours shift, the vibrancy drops, and unless you're using plugins to convert, you're essentially not sure how it'll come out. So if you need to design for print, use Illustrator. Then, set up your file: 1. Make sure your file is set up in the CMYK colour profile 2. Depending on the print size, make sure all your images are 300dpi 3. Don't forget bleed, 3mm as a minimum. You don't want white edges on your prints

@EthanDriskill Genuinely think its just engagement farming for the most part. If not Design Tax, itll be Dev Tax or Copy Tax. Shitty, but people love to rage bait nowadays

I keep thinking about the term "design tax". I used to be one of those designers on a creative team in tech who would receive a slide deck at the last minute for a sales presentation (due the next day) where it would potentially lead to one of the company's largest deals. I've stayed up late many nights working with the sales team and product marketing team to be sure that the deck made sense and looked absolutely perfect so that revenue numbers would look spectacular. Today, I'm helping companies analyze and strategically launch their brand and websites so that they can become successful. It's very rewarding for me and for the businesses I work with. The communication and partnership is key to success. So I'm not quite sure offloading the skill of design to AI is the best move at this point or ever, in a time when the future of business seems a little uncertain some days. And calling something a tax immediately makes it feel inconvenient or annoying. So yes, "design tax" seems pretty insulting.
