@Scott_Wiener Bush and Trump tax cuts are probably the most expensive government project in decades. Buy borrow die is easy to fix with the estate tax. Corporate taxes are pretty stupid though. Just tax rich people directly, don't go through a proxy and make it harder

In recent decades, the U.S. tax system has become profoundly less progressive. It’s cost our country more than $10 trillion that could fund health care, education, housing & other essential needs. It’s also contributed to the explosion of our national debt. We need to reverse course by repealing the bulk of the Bush & Trump tax cuts, ending loopholes that fuel tax avoidance — e.g., carried interest, borrowing against stocks & other assets (“buy, borrow, die”) — & ending corporate tax loopholes that allow massive corporations to pay little or no federal tax.

If you have this weird gut feeling that the rich pay little tax in the US, your gut is spot on... Source: nytimes.com/interactive/20…

Any state home insurance scheme would of course charge premiums. The savings could come from the state accepting a lower return on surplus capital than private investors demand. The biggest issue is the state mispricing tail risk because it doesn't face the same market discipline as a private insurance company, and politically, has a big incentive to under-price it to keep premiums low.

Socialists in general aren't that bright when it comes to markets and finance, and in this case it's an existential threat: 25% of California's homeowners are in extreme high risk zones. The value of those homes is over $2 trillion. The entire state budget is $250B.

This is perhaps the worst socialist policy idea I've ever seen and while it sucks they have a shot at getting it through, I'm grateful to David for helping raise its salience. Public insurance for homes would lead to instantaneous bankruptcy for the State of California.
David Dayen@ddayen

An important race affecting affordability for millions is totally off the radar. Jane Kim, candidate for California insurance commissioner, is pitching a single payer program for disaster insurance, to align insurance with homeowners. prospect.org/2026/05/14/jan…

If you see a helicopter towing one of these over your neighborhood, bad news: your town is getting a data center. They’re running airborne electromagnetic surveys to map groundwater in the area. TRANSLATION: figuring out how much water they can divert before people notice.

This might sound pessimistic, but I’ve always wondered why no billionaire has single-handedly funded the halting or reversal of climate change purely for the narcissistic thrill of being able to say they literally saved humanity.

@EricBoehm87 Hang on, checking my notes here: They say that with almond water we get almonds, as a reward. What do data centers get us? Besides slop videos and surveillance. Almonds are more enjoyable.

@YIMBYLAND Right this is somewhat common in California where they set up neighborhood grocery stores before modern zoning made them illegal. Ma and Pa in Long Beach, the shop on Walk Circle in Santa Cruz

Prior to ~2012 American culture was earnest in a way that zoomers would find incomprehensible. No irony, no one cared about being cringe. They were totally cool with being le epic bacon chungus. The webcomic Ctrl Alt Delete represents this era to me

@GreenPlusAnE Is the demand for solar land leases genuine market demand? Or is that demand a result of government interventions in energy markets and the subsidies those industries receive?

this is a completely unhinged thing to do that has somehow been normalized under capitalism. imagine explaining to someone 300 years ago the idea of destroying 420k trees cuz a company went bankrupt
Pubity@pubity

California peach farmers are destroying around 420,000 peach trees after fruit company Del Monte filed for bankruptcy. Farmers are heartbroken for having to destroy their orchards, but they have to pivot to other crops to try and stay afloat.

Can someone explain why seniors get to ride SMART for free. Many of them are rich and pay low property taxes. Is this another case of Boomer Luxury Communism?
