@srikosuri Is the $2000 processing fee meant to disuade "premature and/ or inadequate" submissions? If so, that should improve their bottom line. From my understanding, a lot of the costs associated are just turning down submissions. Hopefully at the cost they will recommend an affiliate.

Just rough #’s. Nature mag has >100 people on staff and publish ~1000 papers/year. At $10k/pub, that’s about 10mm/year, which is likely not enough to support even the staff. Is the thought that a good journal should have an order of magnitude less staff? Something else?

@ramencult The way they handled this was clearly awful. I do wonder what responsibility journals like Nature have though in this kind of situation. A widespread and open source library maybe shouldn't be considered for publication when all 26 authors are male.

@SusannaLHarris Bacteria-virus interactions are super cool and useful! I think a surprise to most is that the DNA sequence of the genome is actually not a good predictor of health (except for hereditary disease).

@JordanBHarrod There are a lot of examples of amplification free detection, but the biggest question is scale. PCR testing can be done at >300 samples/ run at relatively low cost, these rapid detection strips and "boxes" can only be done one at a time and are prone to contamination.

@JordanBHarrod It's not immediate, and you still probably need liquid droplets, but it is rapid and lower cost.

My dad is asking about theoretical COVID diagnostic tools, and I don’t actually know the answer to this question, so I thought I’d put it out there for #ScienceTwitter. Help?
