At Lewisham’s Full Council last Wednesday, I seconded @OanaOlaru92’s motion denouncing the Conservatives’ changes to the family visa route. This felt personal: my wife & I have seen on the inside how expensive & contrived the process already is. See below for more👇

This isn’t true, Liam. The motion marks the extension of childcare to 500,000 more of the most disadvantaged children who fell through the cracks, including 4500 in Lewisham. For the record I stand by Labour’s stance that the benefit cap needs to go as soon as we can afford it.
Cllr Liam Shrivastava@LiamShrivastava

Tonight Lewisham Labour voted ❌ Against expanding childcare for families on lowest incomes ❌ Against scrapping the 2-child benefit cap ❌ Against Nationalising Thames Water If you want a party that stands up for all, join @LewishamGreens and let's build an alternative

As our manifesto rightly argued, Palestinian statehood is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people. The UK government has acted today to protect the viability of the two-state solution by formally recognising the State of Palestine.

Breaking: Keir Starmer announced the formal recognition of a Palestinian state and condemns the actions of Israel and Hamas He says that the 'manmade humanitarian crisis' in Gaza is reaching new depths. On Israel: 'The Israeli government's relentless and increasing bombardment of Gaza. The offensive of recent weeks. The starvation and devastation are utterly intolerable. Tens of thousands have been killed, including thousands as they collect food and water. The death and destruction horrifies all of us. It must end' On Hamas: 'Hamas is a brutal terrorist organisation. We are clear this solution is not a reward for Hamas because it means Hamas can have no future, no role in government, no role in security. We have already proscribed and sanctioned Hamas and we will go further.' He says that hopes of a two-state solution are fading but adds: 'We cannot let the light go out'

You can see here clearly how work during the industrial age was fundamentally different from today’s work regime Communities like this were dominated by single type enterprises. There was a shared destiny. You could see, viscerally, the step-wise progress of a given project Precisely because (by current standards) the work was incredibly inefficient and labor intensive, you needed armies of personnel, closely engaged on a single great task. This necessarily engaged a high proportion of the entire local workforce Today’s economy simply doesn’t work this way. Work is fragmented. People go in a thousand different directions. There’s no cohesive narrative that ties it all together

On Radio 4 Mel Stride says we need an “open & honest conversation” about the state going beyond its means, having just before refused to say how the Tories would change things. Yes: the state needs to be more efficient & effective. That’s why Labour’s investing for the future.

Just a reminder that the “socially conservative” views Adnan’s referring to is pure misogyny and anti-LGBT hatred. Such sectarian and bigoted opinions must be called out for what they are and roundly rejected.
Adnan Hussain MP@AdnanHussainMP

Traditional socialism has never shunned the socially conservative. It's liberal absolutism that won't allow the space for differing views - driving away the very communities the Left both needs to survive and claims to represent.

Two men have raped a Sikh woman, telling her “You don’t belong in this country, get out.” This is where the dehumanisation of migrants and people of colour leads: the most serious physical and sexual violence. She has my love, solidarity, and commitment to always stand up to the far right. We must never allow their views to become normalised.

One of the biggest challenges local councils face is the exorbitant and exploitative charges of private providers of children’s care placements. National reform is urgently needed to stop this scandal from plunging more authorities into financial turmoil across Britain.
Jonathan Hinder MP@Jonathan_Hinder

I saw it every week as a police officer. These firms make a huge profit from caring (badly) for our country’s most vulnerable children, all while fleecing local councils. A scandal. Let’s run our public services for the common good, not private profit. theguardian.com/society/2025/s…

Reform should not be endorsing conspiracy theories like this. Nigel Farage needs to urgently clarify why he gave this man a platform at his party conference to spout this dangerous nonsense - or does he agree with it?
