Here’s to the next chapter of the bubble-breathing lizard saga! 🦎💧 So thankful to collaborate with @Luke_Mahler, @AMartinology, first author @cboccia22, and others on this exciting project.

(4) Rebreathing is facilitated by anoles' water-resistant skin - a possible exaptation? (5) Rebreathing may help mix "dead space" air, clear CO2, or possibly harvest O2 from the water (though probably not much) - Lots more to learn with future work!!

Key take-homes from the work: (1) We show with experiments that rebreathed air is recycled for respiration (2) Extensive rebreathing behavior evolved not just once, but in 5 different clades of diving anoles! (3) Non-aquatic anoles do it too, but rarely and inconsistently

For the story behind our paper on underwater "rebreathing" in lizards, check out Chris Boccia's excellent blog post up now on @AnoleAnnals. @cboccia22 @LindseySwierk anoleannals.org/2021/05/12/rep…

Some bright news in dark times. Starting this September, I will be an Assistant Professor of Computational Biology at Rutgers-Camden. I’m recruiting grad students and at least one postdoc. We’ve got a remarkable set of Anolis genomes to explore together, DM me if interested.

Pleasant coincidence. I am at McMaster Univ giving a colloquium in Psychology, Neuroscience and Behavior. @Luke_Mahler is giving a seminar in Biology. So I get to give a talk and also see one.
