Too many people on the internet like to shit on alcohol
I get it Lizard man Bryan Johnson, it’s not “good for you.”
But, I dare you to find a beverage that relaxes you and tunes you into God and the divine cosmos like a good Argentine Malbec
Pair a glass with some smooth Jazz or Mozart and you’re floating on a cloud of creativity and peace
It’s like humans have been drinking this for thousands of years for a reason
From Homer to Biblical Israel to Renaissance Italy this beverage has birthed more high minded than perhaps any thing else

@Nick_Delehanty Presumably the Dublin that is beside San Francisco, but don’t let that get in the way of spreading nonsense.
English

@RobCross247 A testament to human stupidity. An 1,000-year old treasure destroyed for an ugly building that’s hardly lasted 50 years.

There's talk of demolishing the Dublin Civic Offices on Wood Quay and relocating to the failed Camden Yard development on land formerly owned by TU Dublin on Kevin Street located in Dublin 8.
Let's not forget the destruction of the Viking settlement on Dublin's Wood Quay in 1978—when multiple layers of buried history beneath the Viking settlement were removed to make way for offices for Dublin Corporation (now Dublin City Council). Decades of controversy followed, and important archaeological remains were lost forever or entombed in concrete. #Dublin

On standing with the people of Venezuela.

@AlanRMacLeod Why do your figures stop in 2012? What happened in 2013?
English

A lot of people seem unaware of the achievements of the socialists in Venezuela 🇻🇪 before US sanctions wrecked the economy. Here's a rundown by the numbers (taken from the United Nations and quoted in my book, "Bad News From Venezuela, 20 Years of Fake News and Misreporting"):
GDP per capita:
1999: $5150
2012: $6434
Poverty:
1999: 49.4%
2012: 25.4%
Extreme Poverty:
1999: 17.9%
2012: 7.1%
Unemployment:
1999: 15.0%
2012: 8.1%
School Enrollment:
1999: under 50%
2012: Almost 75%
Undernourished population:
2000-2002: 3.8 million
2010-2012: "Not statistically significant number" [i.e.: close to zero]
Doctors per 10,000 inhabitants:
1998: 18
2012: 58
Number of free health clinics built, 1999-2012:
7,000
Number of people receiving old age pensions:
1999: 0.39 million
2012: 2.1 million
During the years of Hugo Chavez (1999-2012/2013), the government built a nationalized healthcare and education system from scratch. In 2005, UNESCO declared Venezuela free of illiteracy.
This doesn't mean everything was perfect by any means, but the gigantic and extraordinary successes the country was making attracted academics, statisticians, and epidemiologists from around the world to study it. Indeed, in 2013, the UN awarded Venezuela special recognition in combatting poverty and achieving rapid human development.
They were able to do this because Chavez nationalized the country's resources (oil) and used the profits to fund social programs, rather than enrich foreign billionaires.
It was precisely this threat of a good example that precipitated a massive US economic blockade of the country, which crippled the economy, and led to mass emigration and hardship. The United States is and was terrified that such a successful example of socialism would inspire people across the planet into believing a better world is possible.
English

@kenfoxe @paulmurphy_TD I think Venezuelans have suffered enough violence in the last decade. Of course in destabilising events it’s always possible… and who knows what will happen next. But I don’t think theres evidence for that highly pessimistic view.
English

@Lukezo @paulmurphy_TD Given the very low probability of a peaceful outcome or some straightforward transition of power, that seems an unlikely prospect.
English

What a great story. Never did I think I'd see the name NoMeansNo mentioned anywhere on the RTE website rte.ie/brainstorm/202…

@john_mcguirk Voting is a legal requirement in Argentina. It’s fair to say they’re pretty disillusioned with their political class.
English

RTE says 68% turnout reflects "disillusionment with the entire political class"..... in another country.
45% turnout here with 13% of all votes cast however... represents a historic mandate for Catherine Connolly.

@liamgallagher here Liam, myself and the missus find ourselves in Tokyo and we just realised you’re doing a gig here on Saturday. We’re only after blasting out some Oasis tunes at karaoke. Trying to buy tickets for the gig… but it’s like reading Japanese.
English

@Ly211 @oasis @NoelGallagher @liamgallagher Wasnt able to get a ticket so wasn’t there unluckily - but assume it was a sports thing..?
English

Can anyone explain why the crowd at Croke Park @Oasis Dublin gig, felt it fitting to boo Mayo & Manchester? It’s ironic my dad was Mayo & I’m second generation Mancunian like @NoelGallagher & @liamgallagher & very proud of Manchester & my Irishness. Just as they are. Weird.
English

@HMcEntee It should be an eduction system… rather than a memory testing one
English

@OfficialHuey @OzzyOsbourne Overlooked by whom? Black Sabbath invented the entire genre of heavy metal. No one (who knows that they’re talking about) overlooks that…!!!
English

I think that @OzzyOsbourne ‘s impact on popular music is incredibly overlooked.
Not to mention him along with Lennon, McCartney, Bowie or even Jagger is disingenuous and music snobbery at its most abject.
English

@john_mcguirk Not sure this follows when Liam Óg from Kneecap has been charged and the police immediately said they were investigating Bob Vylan.

In the United Kingdom, it is a crime to pray, silently, within one hundred meters of an abortion clinic.
