Cooper never made it back. Christopher read his brother's draft, added this scene because he was a parent, and called the father-daughter relationship "the north star of the film." The most devastating goodbye in modern cinema exists because a physicist found a loophole in Einstein's equations and a director became a dad.

I actually liked and appreciated ‘One Battle After Another’ as a document of our times just because it was so incoherent and confused. It was a lib fever dream where the narrative was a bizarre and hallucinatory pastiche that couldn’t hold together. It was trying to ‘say something’ but ended up completely garbled. It was fervent and excited in service of nothing.
