@OdedRechavi Everyone already uses AI to review - make it official, and everyone will write (as they already do) and review with AI. You will not get better science nor innovation - you will get science AI slop. ERC is not something you should just go for because you have an idea.

Announced by the ERC today (really bad news for science!!! It starts in Europe but will affect everybody) Because the REVIEWING LOAD is so bad, if your application fails you may need to wait mulitple years (>3?!?) until you can submit again! The ERC is the lifeline of the leading labs in Europe, so many research programs will be terminated (just no other sources to compensate). The letter from the ERC says “the only way is to reduce applications” (highlighted in the picture below) No!!! It's the wrong direction. Use AI to assist review. It’s not perfect (yet), but it allows more proposals to be evaluated, and it could support, not replace, human reviewers.

@mouthofmorrison Is there any satellite/EO company that went public and didn't plummet their market value? Perhaps Umbra can lead the way. 🙂

@awilkinson You might have fired yourself from sales but are still very good at it! 😀

There is one simple reason that I have a large business: I fired myself. What do I mean? First, I fired myself from the jobs I hated. Accounting. Legal work. Later, I fired myself from sales. Marketing. HR. Only focusing on the high level. The things I loved. Becoming more of a coach than a player on the field. But, eventually, I realized I wasn't a very good coach. And by coach, I mean CEO. I loved business and strategy, but I hated managing large teams. I realized that I was very strong at going from 0 to 1, manifesting an idea, but I was terrible at going from 10 to 100. I didn't like the details. At first, I whipped myself. I read Good to Great. Five Minute Manager. The Effective Executive. I knew all the dance moves, but I just couldn't do them. I simply wasn't good at it. For years, I beat myself up, and my companies suffered. Then, one day, I read about Warren Buffett and my whole life changed. Buffett, it turned out, had abstracted business to the ultimate degree. He simply bought companies, then had exceptional CEOs to run them. He had 375,000 employees, and yet somehow spent most of his time reading, making a few critical decisions a year. I found this idea insane. Just like how I felt guilty hiring my first employee — it felt like a cheat code for life — the idea of delegating an entire company to someone felt insane. But, in time, I realized that this was a wonderful deal for both parties. It turns out, as with accounting and legal, there are people whose idea of heaven is 8 hours of pivot tables in Excel. Or managing a 250 person company. And so, Chris and I started hiring CEOs to run all of our businesses. Now we own over 35 of them, and we have a CEO running each company. We look at the numbers monthly, and unless the CEOs call us or we see something super concerning in the numbers, we leave them alone. We just do one annual board meeting per year with each CEO to check in. This has created incredible operational leverage for us. And this is the #1 thing people ask me how to do. Over the past 10 years, Chris and I have done everything wrong imaginable: We have created messed up incentives that have misaligned CEOs with us. We have watched CEOs make terrible strategic decisions that have lost us money. We have failed to do reference checks and hired psychopaths and fraudsters. You name it, we have made every mistake in the book. I get endless questions about this, over the last week I sat down and wrote out a little ebook walking through some of our key lesson on hiring CEOs. It includes: How to diligence someone How to source candidates How to incentivize and structure comp How to transition your company from you to the CEO Book recommendations And a ton more.
