William Ruto today jointly launched the Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Extension (Phase II) in Kisumu, marking a significant milestone in advancing regional infrastructure and economic integration. The project underscores a shared commitment to strengthening connectivity across East Africa through efficient, modern transport systems. By enhancing linkage to the Port of Mombasa, the region’s principal trade gateway, the SGR extension is expected to significantly reduce cargo transit time along the Northern Corridor and improve trade efficiency. The initiative also reflects a strategic approach to optimizing transport—prioritizing rail for heavy cargo, pipelines for petroleum, and roads for passengers and light goods—while addressing key cost drivers including transport, electricity, and financing. With a substantial share of cargo from Mombasa destined for Uganda and neighboring countries such as Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the project is poised to enhance competitiveness, facilitate cross-border trade, and support key sectors including agriculture and fisheries. This development represents a critical step towards lowering the cost of doing business, accelerating industrialisation, and unlocking the full economic potential of the Great Lakes region. #OpenGovUg

The newly established OranaGate Fruit Processing Factory in Namanve Industrial Park (opening May 2026) is set to transform the agricultural value chain, offering a sustainable solution to post-harvest losses while unlocking new income streams for local farmers. Key highlights: 📌 UGX 22.5 billion investment through a Uganda–Denmark partnership (Southgate Properties Ltd & Orana AS) 📌 Processing capacity of 5 metric tons of fruit per hour (mangoes, pineapples, passion fruits & tomatoes) 📌 Production of high-quality pulp & concentrates for regional and international markets 📌 Filling line of 4,000 bottles/hour, with expansion plans to 12,000 bottles/hour by 2027 Impact on farmers & SMEs: ✅ Provides a reliable & consistent market for fruit farmers, especially in Greater Luwero ✅ Reduces post-harvest losses and stabilises prices ✅ Increases household incomes and supports rural livelihoods ✅ Introduces a nucleus farm model for training, agronomy support & organic farming ✅ Returns organic compost to farmers, promoting sustainable agriculture Opportunities for entrepreneurs: ✔️ Innovative co-packing model enabling SMEs to produce branded products without heavy capital investment ✔️ Production lines for juices, water, herbal drinks, condiments & dried fruits ✔️ Accelerates SME growth, technology transfer & industrial skills development Strategic significance: ✅ Supports the Buy Uganda Build Uganda (BUBU) policy ✅ Aligns with Uganda’s Fourth National Development Plan (NDP IV) ✅ Strengthens export capacity through globally certified, shelf-stable products ✅ Creates jobs and positions Uganda as a regional agro-processing hub This investment is more than a factory, it is a game changer for farmers, entrepreneurs, and Uganda’s journey toward value addition and industrial growth. #OpenGovUg

Big milestone! The Shs 130b Katovu-Kyemamba Solar Powered Water Supply System kicks off as the Ministry of Water & Environment, Lyantonde DLG & @nwscug hand over the site to Indian firm Shakti Pumps. Construction begins to deliver clean water to rural communities.
