@CdScissor You would be surprised at how many people don't like admitting that they like kids/all age things, a while ago I had to argue with somebody in real life because they didn't want to admit that anime was cartoons because "cartoons are for kids!!!!! 😡"

@Tixontoxin64 @li111706 This too!!!! It is weirdly common especially with a lot of older shows in order to make them more "marketable", relating specifically to SM while not a maturity thing, they changed a lot of the items to be more "marketable" for kids toys from the manga design

@li111706 But I definitely see what you mean, a lot of older magical girl shows had some kind of bigger tone changes that we don't see a ton in newer stuff for kids, even Pretty Cure Dosent get as griddy as it was 20 years ago

@li111706 Kindaa, the main reason I bring it up as a kid show because it was specifically marketed toys for young girls, it had a lot of preschool toys too, so at the very least the 90s anime was appealing to kids of all ages, older animes also got away with a bit more mature stuff

I do think this is part of it but it's also a lack of accessibility. A lot of magical girl shows aren't available on streaming, don't get a dub, and/or don't get properly marketed/promoted.
I'm okay with watching subs but it is a barrier to accessibility and gaining popularity.

the problem with the "why don't they still make magical girls :(" question is that they still do make magical girls. dare i say it these last three years have been amazing for magical girls. its just that the people asking this want the magical girls THEY grew up with
