If Nolan wanted to make a modernized version of The Odyssey that imposes modern psychology and preoccupations (not to mention racial demographics) onto an ancient epic, he could have done an interpretation set in the current day. There are many examples of that kind of thing. But transposing the modern mindset and worldview into the ancient world turns the whole thing into a farce, which is why a number of scenes look and feel like a Mel Brooks movie with better cinematography. It’s totally absurd. What is the point of a story set in ancient times that doesn’t even try to actually capture ancient times?

If someone made a movie set in Africa and based on ancient African folklore, and then populated the cast with white people and other random races and ethnicities that have nothing to do with Africa, everyone would say that the casting is ridiculous and distracting at best (and I would agree). Yet the same thing is done in the reverse to a foundational text of western civilization and even conservatives line up to defend it. It’s pathetic, honestly.

Then we break the system that let them do it. The question is not whether we will lose our democracy. The question is whether we will fight to take back what has already been stolen. I learned in recovery that you can’t heal what you won’t name. Neither can a country.

A story about time, memory, guilt, fate vs. free will, and the human cost of greatness. It reminds us that poetic beauty lies within the chaos of life. Simply put, Christopher Nolan’s The Odysseus honors Homer’s poetry. Every person has their own “Odyssey,” full of monsters, temptations, and the distant light of home. It’s just up to us to find our way.
