CSE in Ethiopia: A CSE team is currently on the ground conducting a series of technical trainings, aimed at strengthening urban sanitation systems in Ethiopia. The first training on Integrated Wastewater and Septage Management (March 23-25) opened with an overwhelming response from over 40 senior officials representing diverse utilities, regions, and cities. These officials are the key drivers for the The World Bank's Second Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Project, which will implement Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants across 24 cities in Ethiopia. We extend our thanks to Er. Demisse from the Shashemene Water Supply and Sewerage Board for the warm welcome, and to our partners at the Ministry of Water and Energy, Ethiopia, for all the arrangements and collaborative sessions. The CSE Team on-site: Dr. @singhal_sumita | @AneesUmra | @CseSarim | @MANISHM50877458 Ethiopia team: Mr. Nuredin | Raji Kifle | Afework | Gameda

Our hands-on training on Preparing Shit Flow Diagrams (SFDs) kicked off yesterday at Anil Agarwal Environment Training Institute! We’re excited to host 15 participants from @CFARngo for this three-day immersive programme. The training blends theory with real-world exercises, from understanding the sanitation service chain to actively mapping SFDs using case visuals and group discussions. The energy in the room has been incredible: collaborative, curious, and fully engaged. This CSE–CFAR partnership aims to build strong technical capacity in preparing and interpreting SFDs. Looking forward to two more days of learning, unlearning, and building understanding of sanitation service chains.

Are you building faecal sludge treatment plants (FSTPs) or setting up FSSM systems? Join us for a crucial global webinar! Organised by the Water Programme of Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi. Date: May 19, 2025 Register here: cseindia.org/effective-and-… Infrastructure is just the beginning. Real impact comes from effective Operations and Maintenance (O&M). Through our work in Uttar Pradesh, India, CSE has helped cities transition towards inclusive, decentralized, and sustainable FSSM. Now, with our newly launched Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), we offer a practical blueprint for managing FSTPs and co-treatment systems — applicable not just in India, but across the world, especially in African and Asian regions taking early steps in FSSM. In this webinar, you will learn: ☑️ How to make FSSM infrastructure truly functional and sustainable ☑️ How to use simple, adaptable SOPs for diverse technologies☑️ Lessons from lab evaluations done by CSE on treatment performance ☑️ Best practices for scaling and replication If you are 👉 New to FSSM 👉 Starting to build faecal sludge and septage treatment infrastructure, 👉 Looking to optimise your existing systems, this session will provide practical insights on why Operations and Maintenance (O&M) must be central to your strategy, and how to get it right from day one.
